Critical warning issued from the Bitcoin Gold team over malicious file

in #btg6 years ago (edited)

On Sunday, November 26, 2017, 01:00 UTC, @bitcoingold tweeted a blog post on their website, www.bitcoingold.org, issuing a critical warning about a suspicious file of unknown origin packed into their Windows Wallet on both their Github release page and their Download page.

They advise that anyone who downloaded the Windows Wallet between November 24th and 25th should not use the file in any way and should check their computer for malware.

Attacks like this are the reason users must always confirm their downloaded files via SHA-256 checksum. Verifying a checksum is a sure way to verify the contents of a download. More information here.

The BTG network is still a tad unstable. Be careful...

What really bothers me is that they used a voluntary open source developer of whom they did not know the true identity. Sure, I know opensource and contributing is all good, but when making a money system, giving tasks to randoms who are questionably eager to help is not the way to go.
