Theresa to leave at the end of May.

in #brexit5 years ago

Few will lament the departure of Theresa May. But she was done in less by her personal flaws, than by the untenable structural situation she found herself in: that there is no parliamentary or public majority for "hard"/no deal Brexit, but also none that would support any deal with the EU that the latter is likely to accept.

I personally think there's nothing wrong with holding a new referendum that might reverse Brexit.

But that path is politically dangerous for a Conservative PM as well.

Whoever replaces May will inherit this fundamental dilemma. There's certainly little reason to think they will be any more successful than she was in trying to extract concessions from the EU.

Under other circumstances, I might be happy to cheer the (mostly well-deserved) travails of the Conservatives. But now I fear that if they keep on floundering, it will open the door for the truly horrendous Jeremy Corbyn to become Prime Minister - a man who combines old left socialism with new left anti-Semitism. It's possible that the British political scene right now sucks even more than that in the US, which is saying no little!
