Also, I was wondering (perhaps this is a topic for an actual post) - the reviews you receive from other authors and publications - what is the process for procuring those? Good reviews carry weight, but even more so from industry players.
I look forward to reading this.
For Wormwood my process was a bit haphazard, but for my last book I created a spreadsheet and then sent out query emails to review sites that I found. You can also email popular Amazon and Goodreads reviewers. It's definitely a numbers game, these people get hundreds upon hundreds of requests. Also, once you've gotten a bit of a reputation you can query people that you know as well and ask for blurbs. I also got some reviews from people who just happened to stumble across the books.
Thank you for your answer. I have always been curious about this side of things. As with all of the writing process I know it is just one of the steps an author has to pass but to know what others have done is helpful. It is a numbers game, and one has to start somewhere.
You can see that I got quite a bit more buzz for 'Ecstatic Inferno' because I actually had it released from a press, and I'd gotten more name recognition at that point.
That makes sense. Keep producing material, and over time it will develop. Its the starting point that seems to be the confusing point. Always good to learn about these things, thanks.
It's important to get comfortable with rejection. There are so many writers out there, you really have to push hard to get noticed in the beginning and it can be disheartening to oftentimes get nothing back but white noise. Just don't give up.
Thanks for the advice and encouragement. There can be a lot of white noise indeed. But you are correct, there are a lot of writers out there trying to be noticed. Keep writing, and keep trying.
I just finished this a few weeks ago. It was really psychedelic and terrifying, especially trying to work out what was real and what wasn't.
I liked that you captured the horror of schizophrenia without glamorizing it.
