Young Blood: Fountain of Youth?

Scientists have been conducting experiments involving the injection of human teenage blood into old mice to examine its effects.

The results may surprise you.

• Healthy 18 year old human blood plasma
• Plasma injected into 1 year old mice (equivalent to 50 yr old humans)
• Regular injections of human plasma for 3 weeks
• Compared activity of old mice to that of younger mice with no injections
• Immediately noticed that the older mice were more energetic

The key to youth appears to be in the blood plasma – the liquid part of blood. Several studies have found that injecting plasma from young mice into old mice can help rejuvenate the brain and other organs, including the liver, heart, and muscle.

Previous research has found that stitching old and young mice together has an interesting effect. While sharing a blood system works out well for the older mouse, the younger one isn’t so lucky. The young animals started to show signs of brain ageing, while the brains of the older mice started to look younger. “We see a rejuvenation effect,” says Minami.

The research also indicates that new cells and neurons were being produced in the hippocampus area of the brain, related to memory and learning, suggesting neurogenesis.

Young Blood Start-Up

A start-up company has begun buying blood from young people, 25yrs and younger, and selling blood transfusions to individuals 35yrs and older for $8,000 USD. Entrepreneur Jesse Karzamin runs Amrbosia the sole company providing the service in the US, for the time being.

PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel, for example, told Inc. magazine last year he was "looking into parabiosis stuff." (Karmazin says Thiel isn't an Ambrosia client, and it's not clear whether Thiel has actually started getting transfusions.) Despite the fact that benefits of parabiosis in humans haven't yet been scientifically documented, Karmazin (who gets his company's supply of young blood from blood banks) claims some of Ambrosia's 100 or so clients have seen blood biomarkers for heart disease, cancer, and Alzheimer's disease lessen, and that at least two clients have seen their actual Alzheimer's symptoms decrease.

You may recognize Peter Thiel as the man behind the Palantir software used by the US military and IC. The CIA provided Thiel with 500 million seed money for the start-up. There's evidence linking Palantir to the NSA mass surveillance program.

Implications

There's already research underway to study the potential benefits for elderly people suffering from degenerative diseases and alzheimer's disease. For many, these are truly remarkable discoveries but of course there's another side as well.

If the blood of youth proves to be a fountain of youth, it has some disturbing implications, especially in light of the fact that 800,000 children go missing in the US every year. Could the most vulnerable in our society be targeted and victimized for their life giving blood?
