Lets discuss: Intellect and DepressionsteemCreated with Sketch.

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

In our "little" modern society it became apparent that intellect is closely related to the depression, and that depressive people have "realistic" view on, well just about anything; It is called Depressive realism.

"... Is the hypothesis developed by Lauren Alloy and Lyn Woven Abramson (both professors of psychology) that depressed individuals make more realistic inferences than do non-depressed individuals."

With that being said we can use basic math to conclude that realistic people are also depressing ones.... It sounds like I just recycled the content so I can stretch the text little bit, however Im trying to draw attention to the fact that the reality of our existance makes us depressive and in more serious cases; suicidal. How mind boggling is that? So let us think about that little bit. Everyone has a certain threshold he or she can bear mentally, and once that threshold is crossed a person simply seeks a way to relieve the pain (drugs, alcohol, etc..), and if the pain persists, suicide becomes a tempting easy way out. How human society is to achieve an equilibrium if the more we progress mentally, the more we want to end it all. Can it be that answer for bright future of humanity is for us all to remain stupid? Its a fact that number of the Intellectual people has been gradually increasing over the years (so called The Flynn effect), and that every following generation is superseding the latter. If the tempo continues we might have a lot of new problems on the social level.

My take on this: I believe in society regenerating it self, it has happen a lot of times in the history of human kind that one or the other crisis appeared and ravaged the societies. Now sooner or later when this does become a problem, I don't think it will take a lot of time for the people to come up with a solution for this social problem that may or may not occure in the future. While the problem might not be so wide spreaded or recognized on the bigger scale, families and/or other social circles might have difficult with adults and or teens experiencing existential crisis or similar depression/intelligence induced problems. In those cases we need some sort of education for parents to deal with the problem they never faced before. At the end, I am going to leave you with this thought. What if your next or first child is substantially more intelligent than you are, and what if you can't find a way to influence him or her. What if that child starts having existential crisis and you have no control over it? This might not happen to you. But it had happened before; and it is happening now.

Now I want to read what you have to say about this matter. Do you have something to add, or do you think I am completely wrong. Only thing I love more than writing these blogs is debating with someone. I wish more people joined these discussions, so if you could resteem, that would be awesome.
Feel free to give me ideas for the next one and in case you write similiar blog, I would be more than happy to read it.

Sort:

I do think there can be a correlation, and perhaps it is partly because people of intellect "live in their head" more.

I also think there is a very strong connection between creativity, the arts and depression. Many actors, musicians, writers and painters have suffered from depression or bipolar disorder. As to why there is such a correlation, I'm not exactly sure. But the old trope of the "tortured artist" has a lot of truth behind it.

If they are smart they would not kill themselves :P

Indeed.

It never gets better.
You will never escape your feelings of worthlessness.
You will never find your purpose.
You'll find there is no meaning.
You will never please her like he did.
Your dreams will never come true.
The life you live will never be as good as that in your imagination.
You will never get it done.
You'll never have your dream job.
Even if you do, it will be a let down and you will hate it eventually.
You'll never be the best.
You'll never make enough money.
You'll never be brave enough to make the change.
You'll never be brave enough to check out and end it all.
You'll die full of regret.
The emptiness you rush to fill up inside is infinite and unending.
The validation you seek outside yourself is as empty as you are on the inside.
The little windows of relief you find will never last, or last long enough.
It doesn't get better. It never gets better.

oh snap fascinating hypothesis
"... Is the hypothesis developed by Lauren Alloy and Lyn Woven Abramson (both professors of psychology) that depressed individuals make more realistic inferences than do non-depressed individuals."

I think people that are depressed and as a result think more realistic, need to take some ownership of their realistic perspective. I have found in my limited experience/research that people that are depressed are more inclined to feel powerless then just realistic. When people feel empowered or the ability to address a 'realistic' situation depression is replaced with purpose, a mission, excitement. Gets that heart pumping...

Im going to look into Prof Alloy/Woven's research - sounds fascinating

I always found psychology interesting, I might start writing more about psychology themed blogs soon, but first i need to expand my knowledge in the matter. If you know any interesting books I would be interested in, let me know.
