Daily Writing Routine (3/3): The Urgency Of Creativity

in #blog9 years ago (edited)

I have 3 more keys to share with you, that are great ways to feel inspired if the previous advice didn't help you get unstuck and trigger your creativity. They are again in the right order and serve me personally as a checklist of what I do when I have one of those "bad days" where my creative mind doesn't feel like working. I try what I already talked about in part 1  and part 2 and if that isn't enough I do the following:

SOCIAL MEDIA INSPO!

 1. Go on a page like pinterest or reddit and look for „writing prompt“ which will give you ideas. There are tons of sites, blogger accounts and creative ideas out there for free which you only need to go search for. You can then create a beautiful mind map with topics you find and add personal topics you will remember, that you always wanted to approach, create sub-categories and different branches and you have created your own pool of inspiration. Don’t get caught up here though and remember this is only necessary if no.1 doesn’t work. It’s easy to get lost in finding inspiration when really all you might have needed to do is get started. Also if you prep topics that you want to write on in the future, it can be a great starting point and you know that the first thing you do once your writing time starts is go through that list, read through your thoughts and once you feel inspired by one that catches your attention, your creativity will automatically do the rest.

LETTING GO!

2. Then there are those days where no matter how hard you try you just can’t write. When that happens and you’ve already tried tip no.1, there has to be a reason for it, something that is so present in your mind, a worry, fear or anger. Now in that case you need to either eliminate this block by confronting yourself with the problem and freeing your mind of that cloud or find another way to let go of that negative thought. However it might not even be a particular thought that you struggle with, that blocks your creativity, but you simply need to give your creativity some space. Just like when a lot of people bother you for a while, you will feel the need of space, fresh air, silence and simply a break. The same goes for creativity, when you sit down and you have a day where every pore in your body just doesn’t want to write and your brain is far off from getting in a creative zone, here is my advice: Let it go!
Sometimes the best things you can do is to just stop, do something else productive instead and come back once you’re in a better mood, because the number one block that gets in your way of creating anything meaningful is your mood. Believe it or not, but your happiness is truly the most powerful tool you have (let me know if I should do a post dedicated to is very important topic of life) and determines the outcome of anything you do. So what you can do is when you feel completely stuck is get up, move, workout, respond to mails, or anything else that makes you feel good afterwards. It's certainly better to let your mind create something great later, than force yourself to create something bad right now.

CHANGE YOUR ENVIRONMENT!

3. What I've noticed a lot lately is how much your environment influences you. Not just the people, but the walls around you, the atmosphere, the air, the view and just the overall scenery. We tend to forget that there is a huge difference between doing creative work and simply doing work. I've previously written an article on the importance of having a work space that you love. You can put employees in a room with no windows, plants, and color and just a PC and yes they will be able to get work done, like responding to mails etc. but are they happy? no. And if you would ask them to do creative, meaningful, passionate work AND work efficiently, the assignment would be an excessive demand under such circumstances. If you want to free your mind, spark your creativity, feel inspired, try changing your environment. This doesn't necessarily have to mean you need to fly across the globe or leave your city/town, but it can mean to walk around, find a nice café in your area, take a trip, explore different areas and find a new surrounding. Your mind believes and acts upon what your eyes see, what your mouth tastes, what your nose smells, so by triggering your senses and giving them "fresh air" you are automatically pocking the creative side of your brain.

This was part 3 of the short series with 3 tips on maintaining a writing routine and being able to perform creative work consistently. I hope you enjoyed the read and I would love to hear personal additions on the topic from you, as well as requests on what you would like me to write about more in the future.
