Hildebrandt brothers Tolkien calendar - chapter three, my stories about illustrators:) Aragorn and the hobbits

in #blog7 years ago (edited)

I already wrote a series of posts about my favorite artists, and now I want to talk a bit about favorite llustrators.

Today I continue telling you a story about Hildebrandt brothers and their illustrations based on Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings".  Chapter one lives here,  and here lives chapter two.

So, the March illustration i the calender was depicting the scene when Aragorn met the four hobbits in the Prancing Pony:

Remember I sain that in the first illustration, where Gandalf comes to the Shire Greg Hildebrandt junior was posing for Bilbo references? So iy was again for this picture.References for Aragorn were created based on Tim Hildebrandt photos:

Every element of cloth for the characters were made right there, at the artists workshop. Sheath for the Aragorn's sward were made prom paper, blankets worked as the robes.

Pay attention on the round window on the illustration - this is a real window from the attic in the artists house.

One of the brothers posing for hobbits face expression reference.

By the way the work on the picture was much deeper then just creating interior. For the first sketch Tim created exterior view, to form himself a deeper understanding.

And the last thing to say here - pay attention on the deep dark shadows on the illustration, that create dramatic effect. For creating reference a bright lamp was used. Greg Hildebrandt said:

-"I understood that one should use a low placed lamp to create deep shadows when I saw how the which immerses the apple in the cauldron in Disney Snow White"

Thank you for watching:)
