Hildebrandt brothers Tolkien calendar - chapter one, my stories about illustrators:)
I already wrote a series of posts about my favorite artists, and now I want to talk a bit about favorite llustrators. And here I begin it with the first post:)
Today I want to start telling you a story about Hildebrandt brothers and their illustrations based on Tolkien "The Lord of the Rings".
Here I said for many times that I'm a fuge fan of Tolkien since childhood. "Hobbit" was nearly the first book I read myself, and it was love from the first line. Not I draw a lot of art based on Tolkien book and, of course, regulary re-read them. And for sure I'm always interested to know something new about artists who also illustrate or ollustrated earlier my favorite author.
So:) Today I'm starting my story about the Hildebrant brothers, Grea and Tim, and their creation - 1976 year Tolkien calendar. Greg's son wrote a book about how his father and uncle were creating their masterpiece. He was yet a small boy (and posed for the hobbit drawings, by the way), and had a possibility to watch everuday their work at the workshop.
On this first illustration Greg the junior posed for Bilbo. His father and uncle took a lot of photos to use them later as references.
And here is the first sketchdrawing of the landscape, where later Gandalf and Bilbo will appear.
While his uncle and father were seeking for the right angle, Greg junior was waiting for Gandalf. His father's friend had to come to pose. At first Tim tryed to catch the pose, but they needed other face reference for the character. And Greg's friend was just what they needed.
-"While we were reading Tolkien we thought how should Gandalfs eyebrows look. In the text it's said that they're stick out from under the fields of a hat. Finally we decided not to follow the text word to word, cause if we did - we'd had to draw eyebrows per foot long"

I have a book on their Middle Earth work, they paint pictures that are very detailed and in a style that is easy to recognise.
Yep:)
Great post and very interesting.
I have had a love of books ever since I learned to crawl. Bricks and toys were just a tiny distraction until I stole my father's newspaper.
My mother read to me every night, and bought me wonderfully illustrated books of fairy tales. She taught me to read at two years of age. I couldn't get my chubby hands on enough books!
I still love books and collect some of the older elaborately illustrated editions. Total bookworm.
I was learned how to read by my granny:) She worked in the library, and we lived in a town where snow was 12 months a year, so reading always was and still is my favorite thing to do:)
