Hospitality and the Chocolate Fondue Again

Isn't that a sight for sore eyes and drooling mouths?

In case you are wondering the cost, and I certainly was, it's listed for 50 USD but we ended up only paying about 8 USD for it through various coupon trickery I don't understand yet. Probably after the holidays nobody really wants this thing, or has a use for it. Now that we have it it's a good reason to throw more parties.

Is it worth it? To be honest, I'd rather use the double boiler method. But you can't deny its beauty. What's annoying about it?

  1. The motor is loud on this model. Probably there are some that are quieter.
  2. It requires a lot of chocolate. This is not for a 2 person date.
  3. It is annoying to clean, though not so bad if you do it right away.
  4. A lot of leftover chocolate. This isn't such a big deal, I'm planning on saving what's left and slowly drinking it in the form of hot chocolate.

Anyway, that's enough about that. What about the party?

Party Time

Usually, as far as hosting parties is concerned, my wife is the one to host for friends. Since her friends are also my friends, this is all fine and fun. She likes to host, and she knows how to keep the party lively. Me? I don't know, I'm not much of a party person myself, but I wanted to throw one for some folks at work.

I can treat this as a get out of my own shell exercise, but I don't think I was thinking of that when I volunteered to host. But hey, it should count! What was the occasion? Well, a few folks would soon be leaving the team, and I wanted to host a nice send-off. The intersection of that desire and also the desire to finish a whole lot of beers and ciders sitting in our fridge, and the desire to make more use of the chocolate fountain.

But for a fairly large group of people, I'd say that went rather well. No plan. Food, drinks, chocolate. I made more of that apple cider wine combination and that was tasty. Made a lot of progress on the drinks. And everyone seemed to have a good time, all social-like. I suppose the drinking with the right mix of people will do that all on its own. As the host, I did the bouncing around bit, and interacted with everyone. Opal as well, she is always a hit. My wife also got to know a few folks from work as well, and she was surprised that she enjoyed it, because she was dreading the affair. I'm sure all she is thinking is Geeks, geeks, geeks, ew. But hey, we're cool.

Other Thoughts

It's nice not to have to rely on any party games and just be comfortable with the folks around you. For a send off though, in my mind would involve some form of roasting or poking fun, or something more along the sentimental lines of people saying what they will miss about those who are leaving. Maybe they appreciate me not doing so though. That might require a more specialized group than who was present. I'll save that idea for next time...

I would rather use your double boiler method but running chocolate is something else!

Nice chocolate action there. Food porn. Bargain too.

not for a 2 person date

I could do a night in alone with that thing, no problem. This is why I can't buy one.

Always ready to applaud progress on the drinks. You probably made the right move, not giving a sentimental sendoff – those things are cringey to be a part of. Good job man!

But it really is a ton of chocolate. Maybe if I made it less sweet, otherwise I think you'll go sugar crazy.

Yeah probably a good old fashioned roasting would be fun.

you can't beat a roasting: sincere, fun, non-cringey and everyone has a laugh. Probs right about the chocolate. Excepting xmas (which has kinda spilled into January a lot) I've been on a ketogenic diet. Virtually no carbs. The sugar would send me crazy nowadays. In the previous reply, I refer to an older, fatter me haha

I would love to have one of these! Chocolate is too expensive down here thought, i probably get one when i leave!

The mini Willy Wonka chocolate factory!

@eonwarped... keep it away from Opal! LOL.

That is definitely a worry. I hope she would have some danger sense not to lick it if it's just lying around though.... Do they?

Our dogs love chocolate -- and it contains an ingredient called theobromine which can be deadly to dogs in high enough doses. We let our dogs have a little chocolate every so often -- even though we know it can be bad for them. It's usually a little piece of candy (like a couple of M&Ms) or a bite of chocolate ice cream.

It does take a lot to kill a dog actually. I read somewhere that 1 oz of chocolate per 10 pounds of dog is the limit. That's 2 Tablespoons per 10 pounds of weight on your dog -- and our smallest dog weighs about 25 - 30 pounds. The others are 50 - 80. So that would be a LOT of chocolate ... 1/4 to 1/2 cup or more at one time.

They never are allowed anything close to that ... so keep an eye on Opal if you have chocolate where she can get to it. As I said, our dogs love chocolate ... and I don't know how much Opal weighs, but you can't just let her have her fill.

Oh wow thanks for the info! I did not realize it wasn't so gloom and doom if they do consume some.

It does look so cool but being allergic to but love chocolate it would be bad for me

It must be a nightmare to clean

The design leaves much to be desired. Cleaning is tolerable if done right away but it is definitely still a pain.

Yeah but I would imagine the times you would want to use it would be at a party or gathering and I know for me once everyone leaves the last thing I would want to fr would be to clean it up

These are the perfect party favor! It would be funny if you start putting in weird foods and make some sort of game out of it - fondue for thought!

Chuckled at that, thanks. Someone suggested tomato. Ew...

hmmm chocolate fountain. I've always wanted one, although I would have to remember to wash it up straightaway afterward - maybe in a couple of months that will come naturally.

How do you do your footer, Evan? It looks good.

It's quite a pain and feels like quite a bit of chocolate gets wasted unless you lick it clean. Too much chocolate even like that though.

My footer is basically a table in markdown. Thanks!

Good deal. Sounds like you have a coupon queen at home!

She is indeed!

That's a good thing you've done. I'm sure your ex-coworkers appreciate it. Geeks are in brother, lol. Those fountains are a pain to clean.

Is it worth it? when we are talking about chocolate it is damn worthy :P
