That is definitely a worry. I hope she would have some danger sense not to lick it if it's just lying around though.... Do they?

Our dogs love chocolate -- and it contains an ingredient called theobromine which can be deadly to dogs in high enough doses. We let our dogs have a little chocolate every so often -- even though we know it can be bad for them. It's usually a little piece of candy (like a couple of M&Ms) or a bite of chocolate ice cream.

It does take a lot to kill a dog actually. I read somewhere that 1 oz of chocolate per 10 pounds of dog is the limit. That's 2 Tablespoons per 10 pounds of weight on your dog -- and our smallest dog weighs about 25 - 30 pounds. The others are 50 - 80. So that would be a LOT of chocolate ... 1/4 to 1/2 cup or more at one time.

They never are allowed anything close to that ... so keep an eye on Opal if you have chocolate where she can get to it. As I said, our dogs love chocolate ... and I don't know how much Opal weighs, but you can't just let her have her fill.

Oh wow thanks for the info! I did not realize it wasn't so gloom and doom if they do consume some.
