The three-toed woodpecker (Picoides tridactylus)

As I already thought, this woodpecker is not large, medium in size for a woodpecker. From others it is distinguished by the absence of red color in the plumage, the muzzle is "dirty" due to the black color. The male has a yellowish cap of the head, the female has is dirty-white head. And most importantly its difference is the presence of only three toes on the leg, two of which are forward and one - back.

Pretty friendly, both with people, and with the other birds. Basically, I noticed them at the bottom of the trees, for some reason they did not fly up to the top. I do not know why, but for birwatchers and photographers this is only convenient :)

Хорошо дятлу. у него голова не болит.

Very nice photos and discussion. We get two species of 3-toed woodpeckers in our area, essentially northern North America. Three-toed Woodpecker is a bit more common, seen at elevations usually above 3000 feet, and Black-backed Woodpecker * Picoides arcticus* (also has 4 toes) that is somewhat more uncommon. One clue to identification I think is that the Three-toed just looks shabby, "dirty" as you describe, but the Black-backed looks very crisply marked and clean looking. Sorry I have no photo to share handy, but you can check online if you like.
Both, but especially BBWO are strongly attracted to burned forests, where they peel back the bark rather than hammer with their bills. Cool birds. Good birding. Steem on!

Thanks for the comment! It is very interesting! I read about this Black-backed Woodpecker in the Wikipedia. He looks funny :)
Haha. Well, it's understandable why they like burnt forests. We have in the middle of spring, the forest in which I often go, the grass is burning in it, and the fire passes to all sorts of hemp and logs. And the birds are very fond of digging in all this burnt . They love fried insects, which do not have to be caught, just saw and ate.

Beautifully and informative.
