Why Memorize Scripture?

Why do I personally memorize scripture? I am convinced that there needs to be strong reasoning for memorizing scripture that is personally compelling to a person to get them from studying to actual memorization and retention. What is the value? Why do it at all? Here are my personal reasons for memorizing scripture.

1. Building — Psalm 119:11 — Your word I have hidden in my heart, that I might not sin against You. (Sin prevention)

2. Go the extra mile — Hebrews 4:11—12 — Let us therefore be diligent to enter that rest, lest anyone fall according to the same example of disobedience. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two—edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. (It is the living word of God, and memorizing puts the living word of God in me)

3. Be humble — Colossians 3:2 — Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. (The Biblical words are from Heaven)

4. Set the example — Matthew 24:35 — Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will by no means pass away. (Long—term value)

5. Never get discouraged — Joshua 1:8 — This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. (Good Success)

6. Be focused — John 8:31—32 — Then Jesus said to those Jews who believed Him, “If you abide in My word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” (Knowing truth / freedom)

7. Have attention to detail — Psalm 119:98 — You, through Your commandments, make me wiser than my enemies; for they are ever with me. (Wisdom)

8. Be grateful and thankful — Romans 15:4 — For whatever things were written before were written for our learning, that we through the patience and comfort of the Scriptures might have hope. (Comfort and learning)
