Randowhale vs. Whaleshares: Round 1

in #beyondbitcoin7 years ago (edited)

@randowhale vs. whaleshares FIGHT!

When whaleshares was first announced, there was a lot of excitement about it within the steemit community.  Shortly after there was some blow back from a few concerned parties.

The positives and negatives have already been covered, so I'm not going to comment on it.  Theoretically these two services can be almost perfectly compared in this regard.

There are four major differences between randowhale and whaleshares.

Whaleshares utilizes bitshares, so you must have an account there.  Randowhale requires you send 1 SBD through steemit.(price may change in the future)

Randowhale has randomized the vote 1-100 percent, so you don't know what your reward will be for your 1SBD.  Whaleshares gives you a flat 1% per whaleshare you spend.

Whaleshares provides token giveaways and promotes community based quality rewards and minnow support.

Randowhale is a script that can be implemented on any account.

The Experiment

With all this hype and controversy going around I decided to put these two services to the test with a pure use case.

Since I am already conducting a resteem study here I chose this same post for the randowhale vs. whaleshares: round 1.

First I sent my one and only SBD to randowhale and got the lucky 31%!

This increased the post payout from $4.10 to $6.70.  A wonderful $2.60 for the price of 1 SBD.

Next I cashed in on 31 whaleshares to meet the same percentage vote as randowhale.

This time it increased my post payout from $6.79 to $11.01.  Awesome, a $4.22 increase this time!

In the end I am happy with both services.  10/10 I will use both again.

Whaleshares wins the first round!

Its vote was worth more and I didn't have to pay for it since I received my shares as a giveaway.

This was a very close call

I have to admit that the random element in randowhale is super fun, but I wouldn't rely on it.
Randowhale was easier to use since I didn't have to utilize a different website.
Bottom line cash value gives whaleshares a commanding lead.  $4.22 vs $1.60 ($2.60 vote -$1 charge)
I also like that whaleshares introduced me to utilize bitshares, and gives a minnow like me a fighting chance with the giveaways and rewards.

Feel free to tell me what you guys think and let me know what your experience is with these services.

The target for round 2 will be some unsuspecting noob so stay tuned!

As always,

Thanks for stopping by
Good Luck and Enjoy!

I wonder if it would be better to posts that had no votes. I am pretty sure my upvote is higher for posts with higher payouts.

I'm not sure exactly how it works. Hopefully someone can tell me so I have a better understanding and can conduct a more accurate experiment.

You need to factor the effects of the n^2 algorithm into your math/analysis. A second vote from a whale will always move the payout by a larger amount than the first under the current algorithm.

You also need to factor in the amount of SP and voting power of the two accounts. As of late last night, @randowhale's voting power was down to at least 50% or so.

Thanks. I don't know exactly how it works, so round 2 will be the other way around. I'll also be sure to document the voting power on each.
If you could teach me the equation that would be great! Otherwise I will have to generalize a little bit.

one thing is incorrect here. whaleshares will always be worth 1% each. that is not something intended to be bent unless there is a significanly advantageous reason that outweighs the ridiculous level of mistrust that comes with messing with those variables.

Also, holding whaleshares tokens means they can accrue in value if steem goes up. Think of it as us being able to unlock the 90% of Steem value that is locked away.

SO imagine every whale with their own tokens...that give them incentive to build communities.

Randowhale is cute, but its purpose is not to build communities. It is a cute little play service like SteemDice. So they dont even really need to be "VS". :)

I'd also add that since you are powering up the account, holding tokens is good because the amount of steem accrued from an upvote will also increase over time.

That's true too. Thanks. Theoretically, both accounts could do this right?

In theory but I have no idea what they are doing with that account, only what is going on with whaleshares. I plan on powering up an account to use for whaleshares too in the near future. Coming Soon- WalrusCoin!

haha nice. I'll keep an eye out for it :-D

I'll keep my eyes open for it too...

Thank you for notifying me of the error. I have edited and corrected my mistake.
Awesome, increasing value over time and community building. I'll be sure to include these facts in the next round.
Thanks for taking the time to comment @officialfuzzy !

I think both experiments are worth exploring. I like how rando has everything on this chain available to all members.

Does make it easy and convenient.

You did it again, a very interesting experiment and a well written post!

Hey thanks! It's really fun doing things like this. I love it!

Call me a lazy bastard old fashioned but I like the simplicity of @randowhale and I shall be using his services again!

I'm right there with you man. I only care about 2 things. Least effort and most money lol

How do we get whalshares to begin with?... Thats the low point of whaleshare... while randowhale is all about luck... So, i'm not totally convinced about any of this...

Great question!
You can simply hang out here in discord whenever there is a givaway.

Or you can participate in a whaleshares contest like this one

Let's hope things like this stop getting flagged so they can get better exposure.
I agree that the luck variable is a liability. It can be fun however.

Thanx for testing out this scientific crypto hypothesis for the community ;)

I love doing things like this :-) I hope to have more opportunities in the future!
Thanks for checking it out man.

I've wanted to be an unsuspecting noob so bad.

HAHA I will decide based on the quality and value of the post.

how to use whaleshare services?
please
