'Madness' - Featuring Icon Tallan MD
Whether it's water rapids that look like silk, star trails across a landscape, cars zipping past leaving streaks of light in their path, or people crossing at a busy intersection, long exposure photos with motion have always been surreal to look at. They are both abstract and alluring in nature.
This is my entry for the Art Explosion Week 24 'Light' Contest. It's Tallan MD a talented musician, and my friend who posed for a long exposure shoot that I had been conceptualizing for a while.
We achieved this image by:
- Shooting in a studio with controlled light, as well as having a LED light strip set up behind the camera facing the subject. This can cycle through vibrant colors very fast, as it did for this image
- Taking a 2 second exposure while the camera was on a tripod
- I walked around Tallan bursting several flashes with a speedlite, while the image was being taken
- Having a subject who is willing to be vulnerable in front of the camera and move lots.
- Chewing Juju Gum. Because it's good for you.

Beautiful! I really like that mix of sharp stuff and completely blurred bursts of color.
I love that floating hand! For a minute there I thought it was chopped off, until I realized the red stuff wasn't blood, it was a red piece of clothing.

Always a big follower of your work Jon! Have you experienced anyone using your photos on the web without permission yet? Have you had to chase anyone down?
I've had a few people directly copy my work, change it without my permission (even this week in Stratford), as well as use it without asking. I haven't found anyone calling it their own art yet. I'm sure it'll happen, but I'd rather share innocently than keep everything to myself in fear.
