The Subtle Smile
I love working with models who aren't afraid to smile.
That might sound strange....who would be afraid to smile?? you'd be surprised. A lot of models think a very serious frown look suits them best.
That might even work well for fashion, where its more about the styling and expression isn't so important. For the kind of portraits I shoot I much prefer to see some expression.
I often ask models to smile a bit more, or even crack a few silly jokes to bring out a smile. Sometimes it works, like here with Elizabeth. Sometimes models don't like smiling in shots though, which I never really understood.
Anyway, thankfully there a few like Elizabeth that can smile and effortlessly look natural and beautiful in front of the camera 😀
Shot with a Sony A7R III and Sony 24-70 f2.8 GM lens.

Thanks guys!
A real smile is actually pretty difficult to get out of models! Weird!
Its so true. All the confidence to pose for a photoshoot yet most aren't comfortable smiling.
Very cute smile..beautiful photo
Thank you.
I find it easier to crack a joke or smile myself while saying something silly which naturally brings out an authentic reaction from the person I am photographing.
Yep totally, it definitely helps alright.
Maybe it's an overcompensation for how often people put on fake smiles these days in photos. When models are new, they probably smile too often, and then the photographers tell them to not smile.
You might be onto something. The non expression thing works for certain styles. I just prefer some emotion in my portraits, even if its just a subtle hint 😁
