Cherry Ripe Flavoured Beer? Shut Up And Take my Money!
My pup had knee surgery so I'm restricted to drinking beer at home for the next few weeks. Thankfully, there are a lot of great breweries around me so I'm not short of beers to choose from.
Tonight, after taking my pup to the vet for a check up, I stopped by one of my local favourites to grab a different beer. I was hoping to grab their Skittlebrau, which is a skittles flavoured beer. But sadly, it wasn't available for purchase so I got something equally interesting:
Dainton Brewery and Taphouse - Cherry Gripe
For those that don't know, the Cherry Ripe is one of Australia's most well known chocolate bars. It's a blend of chocolate, cherry and coconut that is quite simply the best thing in the world.
Discovering a Stout that has been designed to mimic the amazing thing that is a Cherry Ripe made me the happiest man in the world, so naturally, I grabbed a 4 pack and headed on home to pop one open.
This stout promises flavours of chocolate, cherries and coconut. It sounded so curious and exciting and the idea made me completely forget that I was actually at the brewery to grab their Skittlebrau. I was incredibly eager to give this beer a shot.
So What's it Like?
This stout pours an impressive blood red colour, no doubt as a result of the cherriness of the beer. The beer pours with an impressive head that is a reddish brown colour. The aroma certainly gives of notes of sweet malts and cherry, and perhaps some chocolate notes as well.
On the palate the stout is well carbonated and has a punchy bitterness. There are strong flavours of malts with a mild sweetness which resembles the cherry flavours that are expected.
What is frustrating though, is that there are minimal flavours of chocolate and no coconut flavours. So it really isn't the cherry gripe that I was expecting from this brew.
It's still a decent stout, but not what was advertised which is disappointing given that I hold this brewery in very high regard.

I know, a few times they advertise something and I can't find it. It seems to be really hard to balance these different flavors. I wonder if it is a different taste/balance on a different week. It could be that different batches come out differently. I’m about to have another one to see if anything is different.

I dont like cherrybeers to be honest, it always makes my teeth hurt, if you understand what I mean.

If I put the heater on he sits still for a while though which is good. :)
This wasn’t a sweet beer at all. And wasn’t really a cherry beer. There were meant to be cherry flavours though. Very weird.
