Tipples Beer Review #123 Morning Peninsula Old Pumping Station (Aust)
In what could be the new winner for the longest name for a beer award this beer is actually called the Mornington peninsula brewery old pumping Station Tennessee whiskey barrel aged imperial stout.
Mornington Peninsula is a area just outside of Melbourne, Australia and the the brewery itself is about ten or so years old, they are a pretty solid operation pushing out some nice beer. Old Pumping Station is a sub brand of limited release beers (this was bottle 303 of I think 500)
As you can see it comes in a big fancy champagne style bottle which tells me this is a serious beer which need to be treated like fine wine.
So it seemed an obvious choice when it was time to break out some blue cheese, crackers and fig paste. I should say this is no ordinary fig paste, this is homemade fig and fennel paste which was made by my mum from figs the grow on a tree in her back yard. My mum makes a lot of jam, chutneys, pastes etc from all the fruit she grows and I have to say this is one of her best.
But this isn’t a fig paste review this is #beersaturday (organized by the amazing @detlev) and you can check out the main post here: https://steemit.com/beersaturday/@detlev/whooot-whooot-summer-time-means-beer-time-beersaturday-week-113 so let’s discuss the beer.
It pours Pitch black Smooth creamy head. The nose is sweet molasses and bourbon alcohol tinge, a slight burn in the nose but replaced by sweetness straight away.
On the first sip I was amazed by how stupidly smooth it is for how big it is (10% ABV), It is sweet with a silky mouthfeel at the beginning of the sip, the just the smallish hint of booze, but a brown sugar type of booze.
This really was stunning beer big enough to hold it's own with blue cheese and very sticky fig and fennel paste.
