Lightning Beer Review: Duvel

in #beer8 years ago (edited)

Duvel is a staple among many Belgian craft beer enthusiasts and occasional beer drinkers alike. It's not immediately one of my personal favourites, but I can definitely understand the appeal it has to some people. The flavours are less complex and over the top compared to other Belgian specialty beers, so it speaks to a much wider audience than, say, a gueuze or trappist for example.

Appearance & Taste

When pouring this beer into a glass, always make sure you hold your glass at an angle of 45 degrees and get it straight again once you've gotten about 80% of the Duvel out of the bottle. This will produce an awesome looking creamy head, which doesn't taste bad. I've turned my glass a little bit too early, so the head you see in my pictures is slightly too big actually.

The taste isn't really that complex, there's a distinct yeast and malt flavour and you can definitely also taste the alcohol. You do get a slight fruity flavour, but it's far less noticeable compared to other beers like Tripel Karmeliet. Quite a heavy beer, at 8.5% ABV, so drink slowly and enjoy! I would personally prefer a good trappist or Karmeliet above this one, but that doesn't mean I think this is a bad beer.

Additional Commentary

This is the sort of beer that you really need to be careful with, it pours down pretty easily. You will definitely feel it after you've consumed one or two of them. I'm also not a big fan of giving a score in these beer reviews, I don't think that it's actually that useful for people. Just explaining what I think about the beer is more than enough...

@slobberchops - This might be a type 2 beer for you at the very least! It's pretty heavy on your system in general, even for me.

Full disclosure: I haven't had a drink in a long time. For that reason I've never replied to one of these posts. This time, you were next up, so I looked.

It was wonderful. What a great review. I'm sorry now that I had skipped over you in the past.

Thank you.

No problem at all :) I might do a review of a non-alcoholic beer after this one. There's one in particular that recently changed its recipe and is supposed to taste almost the same as a regular beer. Could be interesting to check if those claims are true.

Another type 2 :(, not good for me.

I once did a night out in Newcastle, and went in a pub that sold nothing but Duval. You couldnt get any other beer, it was a freaky place.

I wasnt drinking that night, but the others around me were getting drunk very fast and noting, 'this stuff is a bit heavy', haha!

It's always fun to see the tourists drink liters of this stuff and basically go from sober to full-on shitfaced in under an hour. Well, funny at first, not so funny when you watch them get sick. All too common, since this is a student town :D

I usually drink just one, can't handle much more myself.

I’m not much a drinker. One beer is about it . I wouldn’t care for a heavy beer. Great review.
