Beauty and the Beast Live Action Film: Hit or Miss?
The debate with film remakes is always hot. Will it add to the nostalgia or will it just ruin it for people everywhere?
As with any remake, the reviews of Beauty and the Beast are mixed. Some say the modernization of the film has utterly smashed the 1991 Disney cartoon version. Others say as soon as the opening credits rolled they were transported back to their childhoods.
No matter where you fall on the remakes are great or terrible scale, there are some notable differences between the cartoon version and the live action version of Beauty and the Beast.
According the Facebook posts on both sides of the issue, the most controversial is LeFou’s sexual orientation. There have been comments on the scene being so fleeting that they missed it and reports that it was so blatant that people would refuse to take their kids to see the movie.
Next would be the Belle not mildly accepting her captivity. In the live action Hermione—oops—Belle actively tries to escape from the Beast’s clutches, ie. Stockholm Syndrome is less prominent early on in the movie.
Perhaps the most feminist of all would be the fact that in the live action version of the film Belle is cast as an inventor instead of just the weird girl who reads. Unfortunately, she is primarily inventing things that help her with housework, but it’s a start.
Regardless they still had this problem…
What differences did you notice between the 1991 and 2017 versions of Beauty and the Beast?
Did you like it?
Did you hate it?
What did you think?
Great movie.
