When ASD children get sick!! It’s a disaster zone!!

in #autism7 years ago

Well today has not turned out as I had expected. I was first woken at 1am by Master 10. He couldn’t sleep and didn’t feel well. So up I got and set him up in the lounge room, much cooler than his bedroom and soon enough he feel back to sleep.

Thinking it was just one of those things I went back to bed. I was up again at 4am, which is when I get up most mornings. I left at 5am to run my partner to work, just around the corner, leaving Miss 12 to watch the house full of sleeping children. I was gone for no more than 10 minutes.

When I came home, disaster had struck. Poor Master 5 had been sick, everywhere!! The floor the bed the bathroom! The rest of the kids were all awake and none of them were looking good. High temps all round and none of them wanted breakfast.

My day has become very interesting. You see it wouldn’t be such a problem if they were able to tell me how they were feeling, but all my ASD children can not communicate under stress. So as soon as they get sick they just stop talking, or they make no sense.

Master 10 and Master 7 don’t speak at all. Miss 3 is not much better, she has spent the morning stuck to me like a bumper sticker and while she is yet to be physically sick, I can see it coming. Master 5 is able to talk however all he can say is I feel bad, which doesn’t actually help me figure out exactly what is wrong.

So after a complete clean up of the disaster zones, I now have my five youngest children spread out across the house quietly laying down. Some are asleep some are watching T.V. They are all in possession of a bucket, ready just in case. Let’s face it, it’s just a matter of time!

My next problem is that we just have to wait it out. There will be no nurofen or panadol. I’m sure this happens with non ASD children as well, but mine will not take it. I have tried every flavour and every brand. I have even tried to hide it in drinks and food but to no avail. So I do nothing.

Miss 12 as usual is not sick at all. She seems to have some sort of super power for avoiding these bugs that go around. All the others get sick and she is still healthy as anything. So she took herself to school. So with my partner at work and my helper girl at school I am left to play nurse and run from one room to the next.

I would rather they all picked a couch and stayed in one place so I could better assist each of them but when they are sick they become completely unmanageable all together. If someone makes to much noise or if one looks at the other the wrong way, it leads to total and utter chaos. Once I have one in meltdown mode the others seem to follow. It is a chain reaction and I plan on avoiding it at any cost today.

So here I am with Master 5 passed out beside me. I have cleaned up disaster number 4 for the morning and it is looking like it is going to be a very long day!

Hopefully everyone else is fairing better then we are.

Oh dear x_x erm hopefully after they've all gotten over their group bug there will be a huge gap before the next one strikes? Is this better than them getting sick one after the other? Aargh! Good thing 12yo has got a mighty immune system XD

Hope it's just a quick thing!

It is better when they are all sick at once. Last year they got sick one or two at a time and it lasted for weeks. One would get better then pass it around. It was horrible.
Hopefully tomorrow will be a new bug free day!

There is pure empathy and positive vibes coming to you from this neck of the woods. The nurse in me cries out to hold off on the ED unless there is a fluids issue - keep those fluids going into each of them and all shall be well... Well done with all your hard work and don't forget to look after you!!

Thank you, my worst nightmare is getting sick when they are. The whole place would fall apart lol.
I try to avoid the ED at all costs, lucky we have home doctor service if we really need it.

I don't mean to put you off them in general, an ED would be important if fluids were not being tolerated over a priod of time. As long as whats coming out (from either end lol) was being replaced with fluids then all will be ok.
I love the idea of the visiting Dr!! I take Little Man to the clinic and it's a workout!!

Oh dear. Hoping they recover soon, and the same for your sanity! (if you can manage to keep your sanity, please share your secret! I only have two and already go nuts when they're both sick!).

I am blessed with endless patience, or maybe it’s a learned skill lol.

I'm very sorry for the kids. I sympathize with you. So it is with me when one gets sick
, everyone gets sick. I hope they will be better soon.

Thanks. I’m hoping it’s just a 24 hour bug! Fingers crossed.

I feel you..it's really hard that they can't communicate how they really feel. Hope the kids get better soonest!

Thank you, communication is definitely the hardest part.

A loving mommy... I know how parents love their children very much the same how much I love my kids. Just now we went to the hospital to know what to do with my youngest son. He can't spit out the hard phlegm on his throat or chest.

Me and my wife, do not have sleep yet because of his condition. We did nebulize to calm down his body and heartbeat.

May God heal your son...

@kennyroy

Hopefully your son gets better soon as well.
Nothing worse than a sick baby!

I pray they get better soon. Take proper care of them and yourself too. Quick recovery

Much better today!
Thank you.

So sorry for you! At least if they're all sick nobody's plans for the day get ruined...that's thinking positive, I guess.
I know how hard it can be to deal with children who won't take medicine. That's my problem with my son. I'm not even trying to give him regular medicine as it disagrees with his stomach. But at least he'll have some tea! We've been through a bout of flu all last week, which of course included cleaning up the disaster in the bathroom. As I was having a fever myself I simply threw the pijamas and the carpet away!! When I'm very desperate to get his fever down I ground a grown-up pill and mix it with a little fruit-flavored yoghurt! When he was small he didn't know, but at least now he accepts it.... And don't let me start on the blowing the nose issue!!!
Anyway, hope you're coping with the kids and they'll be feeling better soon!

Everyone is much better today, thank goodness.
Medication is such a drama. I’m hoping they all just grow out of it. My older 2 have.
My little darling boys like to wipe their noses on the inside of their shirts yuk!!!

Bleh. Hope they feel better soon!

Thank you! I hope so to.

hopefully quickly healed the baby

Yes hopefully!
