The theme for this weeks ASW contest is homes. My entry is the Ambassador apartments in Gary Indiana. This 68 unit apartment building was originally built in 1928 and its original purpose was to house upper level management staff from the nearby steel factories. This was the tallest and most luxurious apartment building in Gary at the time it was built.

As the town of Gary went into hardships so did the apartments, maintenance virtually stopped for the building during the 60s. During the early 70’s it was converted into low income housing. In 1985 it was condemned by safety inspectors and closed for good.

After the closure it was used as a squat house, quickly becoming a hotspot for drug and prostitution rings. Due to lack of funding for demolition the building stood until 2015. This was in spite of ongoing community complaints about a drug den being across the street from an elementary school.

the picture is very nice,

Seeing stuff like this always amazes me. At a minimum, it seems like a waste of the land it's sitting on. Restore or demolish and rebuild. But I guess the owners are just banking on the land value appreciation and therefore don't have to do anything with it.

You bring up an interesting point about land ownership in Gary Indiana. Usually abandonments are locked up and secured because they are a liability to the owner. Gary has hundreds of abandoned structures and nothing is secured. Also it was torn down by the city in 2015 which makes me think there is some means in place where the city acquires abandoned properties. I really have no idea though.

Well it's cool you got photos of it when you did then. Once again they are great!

Wow what cool shots I do love urban decay shots but it is sad to see a building run down like that

Thank you! The entire rust belt is depressing but also fascinating. It's a story that has been under-told.

Under told is true I had little idea

Great images, there's something so compelling about abandoned buildings, the traces of the people that once used them or something. Thanks for sharing :)

I agree I always imagine what these places where like in all the different phases of their existence. This place went through it all, from the nicest most luxurious place in town, to low income housing, and then to a drug den filled with squatters.

What a great submission. I grew up in an apartment building so its almost eerie to see this photos. Can't believe such a big building is just decaying there.

Some nice shots here! A grand apartment block gone to waste shame. Love the shot down the building💯🐒

Damn Gary is probably a goldmine for abandoned buildings...as sad as it is. Really interesting to see the photos though.

That it is, a lot of the good ones including this building have been demolished in the past few years though.

Dope. Postcard is appreciated too!
