He is obliged to repeat the repressed material as a contemporary experience instead of remembering it as something in the past.” ― Sigmund Freud, Beyond the Pleasure Principle

Thank you - great!

really wonderful work, otto <3 surreal, and beautiful... that expression on your kid self is precious hahaha, and the cloth around the mouth at your middle aged one is very symbolic.... actually a lot of this painting is very symbolic, and it is lovely in the way that there are so much meaning contained in this canvas that way <3

the room, the woman figure, the ball in the middle, how the child's shadow is the man with the silenced mouth and how the child is outside the frame but the man is within a framed work, .... everything is very interesting and very meaningful <3

great work, otto <3

Thank you Spiderman! At that time when I painted it, I had a rough pencil sketch from years earlier, until I finally decided to use the idea. The sketches I did (and still do) are some very basic thumbnails just to jog my memory. More like a visual shorthand. That particular sketchbook is likely buried somewhere in my old house in Canada.

There is so much story in this piece. I could look at it for hours and the pages of story just unroll in my head.

The expression on the boy's face is priceless.

Thank you kindly - I appreciate your comment very much. This is one of the few paintings from my past where I had set out, and stayed on track, a theme that I had sketched out in my head long before I actually painted it.
The little boy (me) is taken from a photo (as is my middle age selfie).

Nothing like a little Freud as fodder for your artwork! Love the little guy's facial expression and the torment on you as older is excruciating! Love it. Thanks for sharing :)

Thank you - the little guy (me) cannot remember what the expression was about.

haha I suppose so @thermoplastic! It's too bad really 😅
