Reimagination

It's always important to throw yourself curve balls from time to time, to keep yourself fresh and on your toes.

This painting started off like all the others. I find that it's really easy to get into the zone if I sit down and focus on making the border. I don't have to think too much about what i'm doing yet.

I try to pick my colors impulsively, whatever feels right at the time, whatever fits the current mood. as you can see from my pallet, my paints get mixed around a lot. I don't clean my brush every time I switch colors, it's partially because i'm lazy, partially because I find that it makes a paintings tones more consistent when everything comes from the same puddle.

The first curve ball was the flora. I wanted this pieces to stand out from the others. The whole time I was working on this I was thinking about illuminated manuscripts and old storybook illustrations.

I still can't decide if I regret the next curve ball or not. I wanted the tonality of this piece to differ from all the rest. It was like an exercise to get me out of my comfort zone. I hate change, but I know it's important if you want to progress.

I added ink.

In a way I regret it, because I think this was the painting with the most tangible effect of recession and depth. Mixing things up is good, but I can't help but wonder what it would look like if I would have stuck to one medium.

Once again the first day of painting was all build up. Just an elaborate frame for the focal piece that didn't exist yet on paper or in the imagination.

I finally reached the end of the tunnel. took me a while to decide what was on the other side.

Another beautifully dark image from you, William. This one looks like it belongs in the same series with the bull one, considering that both of them have multiple borders around them.

Lovely :).

Love love love this. The little animals, and the foliage motif, they are absolutely wonderful :)

I love the snake & bull. Good name for a pub.
