😱 I hate when that happens!!
Most of my paintings are on glass. I added a contemporary twist to an old technique, called "sous verre" or "hinterglas" by using graphite pencil and other media.
I really like working with glass, as for many things, its actually more durable than other materials. It doesn't wrinkle and you won't dig a hole in it, by using your eraser one to many times. Also, even over centuries, there is no yellowing or deterioration of the material....
Unfortunately, it can break 😧
And sometimes it does...
The owners of this painting "Isis and the Moon" (we are talking about the ancient Egyptian Goddess), were renovating their living room and therefore put their paintings in boxes. Quite a collection I might add. When they wanted to hang their art back on the walls, they discovered, that one of the glass paintings was broken. What a tragedy!!
But it turned out, that the piece was insured. They sent me a photo and I was asked to redo the painting...
Well, normally that's not something I like to do, each piece is one of a kind, but here there was just no other way. One can't just glue it back together...
Since the handmade frame was completely undamaged, in a first step, I took it all apart
I couldn't find my original drawing on paper,
so I carefully traced the drawing from the broken piece
A few steps later, we have the varnished drawing
Finally I could put it all back together.
The owners liked the new version even better than the old one 😀
I enjoy reading your comments!

What an exquisite drawing. Do you happen to know who made "Isis and the Moon?"
Thank you, glad you like it. I made both pieces :-)
I find the broken one oddly beautiful
I agree, the way the lines radiate out seem to add to the piece.
I'd even take it further and have it remounted, with the pieces slightly apart from each other, and a dark epoxy poured into the cracks to seal it in place.
I did that with a few pieces very early in my career... one piece I had cut into pieces to have more control over the "cracks" and one I hit with a hammer.. actually mounted the hammer at that spot.
It does have its own appeal. I had another broken piece from a client and they just wanted me to "repair" it only in a way that the pieces wouldn't fall out of the frame...
that's brutal, brother! i always wondered how physical artists approached something like this. it's easy for me to rewrite a piece from memory, though it will never be the same. but a piece of art??? oh man...damn near irreplaceable and hard to redo.
fun look at the process despite the shitty circumstance!
Yeah, that can ruin your day. Thank god, it doesn't happen very often. I had two from clients and I broke 4 that I had just spent weeks to work on. Two of those I could turn into something new.
Loosing a written piece would be just as devastating I think.. you put a lot into finding the right words and phrases and all and then your computer freezes or something like that.... arrrrrgh ☠️
You just proven to all that you have the necessary skills to counterfeit an original Reinhard-Schmid's piece. Well done :)
hehe.. wonder if I could turn that into a "business", better go practice the signature ;-)
You are just amazing. I too find beauty in the broken one the way the cracks radiate out from the center of the moon like moonbeams. But I also love the new one, the way the moon is a bit larger or more bold and present with her. Seems she is more radiant as well. Nice Reinhard. 🙏🏽
The broken one definitely has its appeal. Nice idea to compare the cracks to moonbeams, I actually never noticed that, but you are right.
I had two broken pieces from clients, the other one actually didn't want his repainted. Instead he had me "repair" it in a way that one could still see the cracks
Unfortunately I don't have a photo of the finished piece. I fixed with thin metal profiles like the ones you use for Tiffany lamps for instance. Kind of like the metal you see around the glass in the photo.
Ouch! There's nothing worse. I'm glad the painting was insured and you did such a beautiful job!
I was wondering if you might be interested in doing a collab- I would create a post featuring your painting from this page https://steemit.com/silentportraits/@reinhard-schmid/silent-portraits-look
Alongside one of my poems, credited completely to you and linking to your page. Would that be ok with you? I have made a similar request of a couple steemit artists, so no pressure.
Thank you for your kind compliment.
Your poems are beautiful, of course I feel very honored, if you use my painting. Please go ahead, I'm looking forward to see what you make of it.
I really like the Broken one. The cracks reminds me of stained glass. Maybe you could lead it and put it in a window frame.
I did that with another piece that broke and the owner wanted it just like that. In the case here, the insurance kept the broken one, if I remember it correctly.
It's a pity. I like the way the crack started in the moon.
Glad to hear that it doesn't happen that often, but it must be heart breaking when it does.
Strange thing is, knowing your works are on glass, I had never thought about them breaking until now.
I try not to think of it either and hope that ignoring the possibility helps 🤡
Your strategy seems to be working then. ;-)
Haha... to a certain degree :-)
The colors on the replacement seem even more vivid than the original. Nice deal for them the insurance co. picked up the tab.
Yes, the owners were deliriously happy, that the insurance paid it. Also that they now had the "same piece" with some 10 years more work experience into it.
That's a good point about the improved technique - artwork can get an update the same way cell phones and computers do!
"To update this painting to the latest version, break glass..."
Lol 🤣 Excellent idea, I'll get some stickers printed! That's too funny!!
Hmmm... there's an idea, the glass that they use on mobiles is almost indestructible.
bit small though ;-)
...although cute.
You could go for the tablets, they're a bit larger.
hehe, cute is true. Tablet is a good idea, though a bit extravagant to take apart an ipad pro for materials ;-)
If only George Lucas and Ridley Scott could say the same.
I swear, there should be a law that once 10 years have passed, directors can't remake their old films - instead they must put new characters into the same universe, and let someone with fresh eyes direct.
But that's an entirely different rant :)
Oh man that is cool that you could repaint it even better for them good thing they had it insured. I was wondering about that issue of breaking the glass. What kind of glass do you use in your painting? And I am wondering can you also paint on acrylic the way you do on glass?
Glass breaks under certain circumstances, its a fact I chose to live with. I use "normal" glass of a good quality. It is particularly "clean" with almost no green tint... before it became available I used simple window glass.
Of course one can use acrylic glass, but the fragility adds a certain value for me. Would be like having a delicate Chinese vase made from plastic..
Oh yes I apprenticed as a framer and handled much glass. I do like that it adds a delicacy to you at work making it more precious.
