Fancy a cuppa?

in #art8 years ago (edited)

Some tea bags, candle wax, some dried leaves and an iron. Well I guess I’m ready for a little bit of experimenting.

Tea bags make great mini picture frames; all you have to do is cover them in wax!

I gathered a few bits and pieces together to go in my tea bag, including a little sketch I had done. The candle I will use for wax, but batik wax pellets are really good too. I have some thread, buttons, dried leaves and flowers.

I made a cut at the top of the tea bag and emptied out the contents.

I then placed a selection of items inside the bag.

I scraped some wax off my candle onto the tea bag. I then covered this in layers of newspaper.

Warning! If you have an old iron use it, or be prepared to clean your normal iron really well after. I use lots of layers of paper over my wax to avoid the iron getting dirty. I also put an old towel on the ironing board to protect it.

After all the wax had melted I removed the paper and allowed it to dry. Don’t pick up hot wax!
If I find I have used too much wax then I use the iron on it again, but I put kitchen roll over the tea bag to soak up some of the wax.

They dry with a waxy finish, but are translucent when held up to light.

I'm really inspired to try this out just to have some art on my walls. I think I have a box of large tea bags for making Florida sun tea. They're about the size of my palm. I have an old $6 iron that I got at the thrift store. I just need some candles...and imagination. LOL IF I try this, I'll make sure to tag you in the post. :)

I'd like to try it with some old (photocopied) photographs and maybe stitching into the bags.
Let me know how you get on!

I love the stamp!

Nice one :) Next time try to use folded parchment paper to avoid iron waxing

The iron survived to live another day, ;D

Goodness me, so inventive. This is yet another thing I am going to try. Forgive me for voting and commenting madly on a huge amount of your posts. I just simply love what you do!

That's ok, I did go a bit mad on your blog feed the other night when I suddenly discovered I wasn't following you ( I kept thinking you never post), how many posts did I comment on, lol. I am now following you, obviously!

Hopefully my tomatoes will start to ripen this week as I want to make some of that chilli ketchup!

There we go then, splendid mutual following!! Save a tomato or two for the fermented chilli sauce I am going to make!

Ooohhhh I can't wait!

Nice. Interesting, I'm gonna show my daughter. Thanks!!!!!

Checkout the next post, in about 30 minutes. I have more images that I couldn't fit in this one. With a lot more ideas on materials, they have a bit of a vintage feel.

Next post Looks like a high res X-ray )

I'm excited about it, just finishing putting it together.

@opheliafu Thanks for sharing.
Neat idea for a stamp collector artist. :)

No letter gets recycled in my house without first having the stamp removed!

Nice! The tea bag can also be applied in the art. @opheliafu you see art in everything?)

I was thinking when I read this 'well practically everything... but not poo' , but then I remembered the work of Chris Ofili. So maybe everything can become art, yes!

after his work to understand exactly what art is all over, hah

I'm glad you went to look :D

it was interesting :)

This is so neat and not the same ole same ole thing you always see. I'm excited to try it because I'm not a great artist (my kids tell me I am great at drawing clouds -_- ) but I love artsy things. Scrolling through the comments, it sounds like you have lots of other awesome stuff, so I'm going to follow and check out more. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks @mahma. You have probably always been a great artist, didn't you love creating as a child? You probably just haven't discovered the medium you can be yourself with yet, keep on experimenting. Creativity will be in your soul, I can tell by the way you talk. You just need to rediscover it.

Thanks for takig the time to respond with this non generic "thanks for your comment reply". I think you are right about everything you said, and took what you said about the way I talk as acompliment- so thank you. You mitivated me to dig around in myself, because you are right I do have creativity inside, just not the medium YET to release it. Thanks so much!

It's a pleasure, keep me up to date with your creative journey!

I appreciate the encoragement! I sure will! Looking forward to seeing your continued journey as well!

Nice work!

Glad you like it!
