Rock Murals in the desert

in #art6 years ago

About 2 hours from Las Vegas, Chloride, Arizona is an old silver mining town.

We saw a sign that said 'mural', and followed arrows painted on rocks for a mile and a half out of town on a road that definitely required a high clearance vehicle. There was nowhere to turn around, so once we had started, we were committed!

Later research told us that artist Roy Pucell painted this mural that he had titled 'The Journey' in the high desert country in 1966. It certainly had a 60s feel about it.

Automotive paints were used and have held their vibrant colors.

We saw a few people hiking in, but it was definitely not a site crowded with tour buses!

Artist has drawn his talent on rock forever. Also your photography is good.

Thanks so much! He came back 40 years later at age 70 and did some touch up work, so hopefully they will last many more years!

so vivid! I have heard of that community but didn't hear about these murals. Way cool. Hope you didn't ding your rig to much on those rough roads.

That big old truck turned out to be a real lemon for us, and we sold it and the camping trailer that we hauled out there shortly after we returned home! I like wilderness tent camping, otherwise give me a nice rental by owner when I travel! Those campgrounds are not for me! I plan on posting more Cloride photos...tomorrow will be photos I took there in the cemetery.

I carry all my camp gear in my little subaru all the time. I have my cot and a tarp in there also. I love sleeping out. I'm looking for a van I can take the seats out of and sleep inside. The bears make me a little nervous. lol I have had my encounters.

Oh yeah. Bears and tents make for scary imaginings!!
I have told the story here of how we drove from Wisconsin and arrived in the Big Horn mountains of Wyoming after dark . We set up our tent and quickly fell asleep, only to be woke up a bit later by rustling noises just outside the tent. The whispered strategy was to grab flashlights and make a run for the truck. The flashlight beam showed the biggest jack rabbit I had ever seen, but the fear was enough that I spent the rest of the trip sleeping in the back of the truck!

What a forward thinking artist to use automotive paints. They look as fresh as the day they were painted. Some many beautiful images. The Ying and Yang caught my eye. I love the name of the town 'Chloride' brilliant. tip!
