Wish Upon A...
I finished my latest painting, "Wish Upon A..." and have been busy posting around on various social media platforms. Yes, I still do keep a presence elsewhere other than Steemit, although Steemit has become my primary destination. We all know how excellent it is of course. =)
But, then it came to posting to that ugly platform we've all come to loath and hate, Facebook. Ah hang on! I have a "rude" bit in my painting, a female nipple. I need not labour over this whole issue here, we all know the stupidity of it very well by now. I dutifully censored this no go part of female anatomy and posted it. This was just another reminder of why I make so little time for Facebook these days and focus so much on Steemit.
Will we ever see mass adoption of Steemit? Obviously such issues are going to be problematic for many people who don't like to be challenged. For these types of people, Steemit is probably one of those no go places of the internet. You know, the types of sites that the government and media warn us to steer clear of because only bad people go there.
Should I be tagging this post with # nsfw? I don't think so. It is an artwork. By whose moral standards are we judging this? To American eyes, it IS # nsfw but to European (excluding the Brits) eyes used to seeing bare breasts on advertising everywhere, they do not even blink or stare. It's just normal.
This is the point, we now have a media that spans the globe, and with the advent of decentralised services such as the blockchain, which is supposedly censorship resistant, do we then add the censorship back in ourselves willingly to appease one part of a potential audience?

Beautiful painting! Can't believe people get offended by nipples, we all have them. I just joined steemit and already like it. I hate the fact facebook doesnt show my posts to followers and say "more views?" well pay up...the reason i got on fb is to show my art...and people follow to see it. Its just weird. Can't wait to see more of your beautiful paintings! :)

I like your painting very much. The nipple does not offend. As far as I am concerned, it enhances the art. May I be presumptuous in my interpretation? I believe the nude figure wishing, and reaching out, shows a certain vulnerability and longing. That would not have been the case if you had censored your own painting.
As far as censorship goes, that is the reason why facebook and such falls short: there is no SELF-censorship, but way too much censorship forced upon us by others. What I mean by self-censorship, is the way in which many people writes about themselves willy-nilly, without guarding themselves. So many times people are sorry about what they have said on the spur of the moment. If only they had censored themselves...
Do I make sense? Nobody else should have the right to censor another. However, everybody should have the responsibility to censor themselves.
Thank you @minnaloushe! Yes you do indeed make sense, although I would word it slightly differently. Everybody has the responsibility of filtering their own intake of information and not expect others to censor it for them.
I think we could sum it all up in one word. Mindfulness.

and considering #nsfw, well shell they put that on Rembrandt, Rubens, Michelangelo...? It's such hypocrisy with that tag..

Firstly, I love your painting and the magic glow the figure is engaged in. I love art that has a story or gives the viewer a view into a moment they can interpret.
Second, I am an artist as well and share your Facebook loathing. I still keep a presence there and do post daily there and try to do so on instagram as well, but It is work, i get on, post as quickly as possible and get right off. And how could this be offensive yet my feed is full of all kinds of hateful cruel hate speak about politics and other people.
Facebook is a task whilst steemit is a joy and a haven!
I do much the same now with Facebook also, drive-by, hit and run, postings. While I do have connection to many many friends there, some I would have lost sight of long ago, the time there brings nothing to me, because very few of said friends even see what I post any more.
I'm enjoying making new friends on Steemit. =)

Thank you @artizm! I'm inspired by the renaissance approach to painting, especially by the likes of Caravaggio, Velazques and Rembrandt, but also by modern masters inspired by them.

It took me years to get where I am today. Perhaps I could have arrived sooner if I had been more disciplined. Well all need challenges to push us beyond our comfort zones. Go for it! And stick with it. You'll do great things. =)
