From Broken To Beautiful-The Ancient Art Of Kintsugi
Howdy folks and greetings from the Great Plains of North Texas!
I discovered this new(for me) type of art the other day and I wanted to share it with you, I think it's incredible!
It's called Kintsugi and it originated in Japan and has been practiced for 9,000 years! It turns ordinary pottery and ceramics which have been broken, into unique and beautiful pieces of art.
It's still being done today using traditional methods which consist of taking a lacquer made from the sap of a tree that grows in East Asia and combining it with gold dust. They also use silver and platinum dust.
The results are stunning! Each piece is unique and striking with it's own patterns.
It's also practical. If you accidentally break your favorite mug, no problem!
Part of the Japanese philosophy behind Kintsugi is to not try to hide the damage but to improve on the piece by showing the damage as part of it's history.
This bowl was shattered into bits, think of the patience this repair took!
A fine but plain bowl into a work of art:
After the pieces are reassembled they're held in place with tape:
Even fine porcelain can be saved:
If a piece is missing you can insert another similar size piece from another item:
What do you guys think? You can order the Kintsugi kits online made with the traditional ingredients of the tree sap and no chemicals or glues.
This is one artform I reckon I could do. I think. I don't have an artistic bone in my body but I have alot of patience and this doesn't take creativity!
Thanks for reading folks, God bless you all!

This would have been very handy for me to know when my parents were alive and used to brain each other with every piece of crockery in the house.
oh no! But then you would have beautiful pieces that you wouldn't ever want broken again and they'd break those too!
This post makes me beautifully broken
lol. Well there ya go sirbearbear. Your imperfections can become beautiful!
I think most people would find it easier to just ditch the broken porcelain.
Japanese people are very patient and creative. Good on them to think of this kintsugi thingy. I knew of the art, but I didn't realise they have been around for so long.
Like you don't have patience sir Vincent! That's a good one!
Hi @janton. This is a masterpiece. From imperfections come perfection. The value of the righteously broken spirit comes to mind
Howdy sir princeprincewill! I agree, I almost went into that but I was in a hurry and people like short posts. lol.

Howdy dkkarolien! Thanks so much and I agree about the philosophy. Have you see this in South Africa?
Hi @janton. 😊 No haven't seen it personally but I've read about it many years ago and quotes and articles have crossed my party many times so I've read about it a lot. I just love the idea of it.

I do too dkkarolien, I think it's brilliant and the philosophy that goes along with it!
Hello Mr. Janton! I am seriously considering breaking a mug or a bowl just to do this.

I really think it would be a fun challenge to try, I would order one of those kits and break something and hope it didn't shatter into tiny pieces! You could do posts about your efforts too!
