Six Sad Stories in 6 Words - Part 6 of 6 - An Illustrated Series from J-VO
Part 6
This six word story was really fun to play with. "Epitaph: He shouldn't have fed it".. I mean it brings about a LOT of different ideas - there are a lot of things out there that if you feed them could end up really bad. It brings a lot of different ideas even now.. Gremlins (don't feed them after dark... or bad shit happens).. An alien life form (I think that was just in a movie I saw... "Life" i think it was - they fed it and it grew out of control and went crazy..) - I could go on. In the moment I thought of a Venus Fly Trap. The story starts with "Epitaph," that can only mean that the person referenced is no more - so the consequences of feeding it was definitely grim, to say the least. In my illustration I decided to depict a venus fly trap that had turned on its owner and gobbled him up - lol. It's interesting, because at the time, I had never seen "Little Shop of Horrors" - but I just watched it for the first time about a month ago - and interestingly enough - that was pretty much the plot line - Guy feeds plant- plant grows huge - plant wants food - human food - plant tries to eat everyone. :-P
My process involved working out the shape of the plant and the other elements that help to build the environment a bit - helping to insinuate that a gardener was just eaten - if the bulge in the belly wasn't enough - the gloves, shoes and watering can left behind may be a clue ;) I inked the drawing with my quill pen and then once dry applied the watercolor.
