Pixel Art Landscape: The Importance of a Good Title Screen!

in #art7 years ago (edited)

When we started Super Plexis almost 2 years ago, we were making an RPG, and even though the game has transformed since then, the aesthetic of wide open fantasy world never left us. We still use that vision as the foundation for our backgrounds, characters, and future content.

At first, the idea that we had to fit sprawling backgrounds in these vertical compositions felt counter-intuitive (landscape paintings/photography are synonymous with wide frames to the point that we literally refer to that orientation as "landscape"), but this is merely one of many challenges developing for mobile devices! And in the case of our gameplay, everything needed to be consistently vertical.

But limitation is sometimes inspiring, and after a few iterations we've landed on our current title screen, designed with classic games in mind:

(and yes unfortunately buttons do obscure a good percentage of the art haha, but that is why we have a gallery!)

But vertical or not, landscapes are the perfect introduction to any game. They are a genre designed to draw the eye in; a visual invitation to explore what that world has to offer.

I would say move the blocks around maybe shop and gallery over the town single and multiplayer at the river and mountain or smth, but I'm not sure if it's a good idea I would like it, it's not standard Have to say the background is great and really makes a good impression for the effort put in or even better multiplayer at the town and single over the pond :P damn do i hate mobile apps :| :D they are so cut and dry a bit limited.

also WELCOME again I will spam a bit hope to not disturb you too much :)

Haha yes you've perfectly illustrated my struggle as a designer with this sort of mobile interface, it's been a massive learning experience to say the least. I'm very much looking forward to our potential ports to PC/console which will alleviate some of these issues, but for now the mobile versions are our stepping stones to get there. Thanks for the feedback!

Sure, I will do my best to help out, I like your style and the idea :) so you have me on board :) Nowadays its easier to develop for mobile I guess, with more users too

Cheers and good luck :)

again if you have questions just ask away :)

are you using a engine that supports multiple ports btw I've heard of a few, but I'm not really well acquainted with engines, I have UE laying around for years now :D

Thanks I'll keep you in mind! Yeah actually we're aware of things like Unity and other multi-platform solutions, but my cousin is dedicating to making everything custom, from scratch, which we think leads to better end result that runs faster and more efficiently. Unfortunately it does mean that the process of moving from iOS to new platforms means writing an entirely new engine, in a brand new language. But that is already under way! And will be worth the extra bit of waiting. Meanwhile, I'll be creating content for the current iOS version.

Great It's awesome to hear you've actually got this far I have to applaud your persistence it's quite the ride and you will reap rewards for sure. I bet you both learned a lot. I was expecting a 5 man team at least :D. I don't own a decent mobile so I can't help you there. But I guess I can admire from a distance, I'm no coder and my art is the weakest of my skills.

It's nice to hear the pluses of developing from scratch. I guess you have to know almost all about a platform.

Great post and I am hungry for more of what you're into. I am, also, interested in seeing your video/films, too. I viewed one on your youtube videos and loved it. I nominated you for Steemvoter Guild: "Nominate-a-Friend" for the Guild Vote !https://steemit.com/steemvoter/@steemvoter/6mjjqm-steemvoter-guild-nominate-a-friend-for-the-guild-vote

Wow thank you very much for the mention! I'm still learning how everything works around here but so far it's been a warm welcome (and certain features are very intriguing, would you recommend signing up SV Guild outlined in that post? I could see how some automation would be useful, but it's also early enough that I'm not sure I need it just yet).

But yeah since you mentioned it I'll definitely consider posting some of the films I've been involved with! Similar to the game, they are family-and-friends efforts, but we've done some professional creative projects as well.

if you want any questions answered you can ask, I can give you my best, there is a lot of material but it's always better to have a live "feed" :D in short it's a chain backed by the currency vested in the accounts.

this site is the reader of sorts, you can upvote and reward based on your POWER , STEEM is liquid and can be transferred easily, SBD(steem backed dollars) are just that like steem but compared to bitcoins and then dollars, you can check out @son-of-satire for how to cash out if you wish.

Resteeming shows the post on the feed of your followers and on your blog and you can flag which is like a downvote. Comments are comments and voting increases the reputation next to the account.

https://steemit.com/@gmedley MainSite https://steemd.com/@gmedley for a quick check (you can vote 40 times a day) Voting Power drains away, there are bots :D nevermind you can ask steemdb is the same like steemd but with a better interface.

check the welcome page, most importantly there is the chat and I've learned of the most recent best chat apps Discord and Telegram https://steemit.chat for the chat for some extra apps http://steemtools.com/ there is mobile support from esteem and a few other apps for ease of use, everything is still in development the community is big at least for me. There are some problems I wouldn't concern you with right now. And there are many great creators and curators, interesting poetry, writing, music ... trading ... philosophy.

I'm ending it here to not blow your brain too much :D

About the SV Guild a author can be nominated and voted on 1 a week so thats about 20 in payout. the highest upvoted comment wins.

Questions are welcome once again :) that's it for now :)

Voted on your posts and gave you my 2 cents :) more like half of one :D but the comments should be worth something :D

I am, also, new to all this. I wouldn't know which guild to join or how many there are to choose from. I am reading a lot of posts and comments to learn what is going on. The community here is amazing. I follow you so I should be getting your posts when you post. Hope you get the recognition and steem. You deserve it and are very talented.

check below :) if you need to see how you fare compared to my "database" :D

The art looks fantastic!
