STREET ART #30 – When street art changes the appearance of a city

Street art and graffiti has clearly changed the grey industrial city of Aalborg (Denmark) into a vibrant and colorful city. It started as tagging and thus considered vandalism. Today it is an accepted art form for everyone to enjoy. This is very much due to the «We Aart festival» which invites artists to come and make their mark on the city. Aalborg is a city I visit often as it is my hometown.

Aalborg is the fourth largest city in Denmark with a rich history that dates back to the vikings, who founded the city in the 7th century. The Viking settlement just north of the city, is one of Scandinavia's largest burial sites. It is a city with a rich and long history. In town there is an undergrown museum with the medieval ruins of a well preserved Franciscan Friary. You have to take an elevator to get underground!

A great way to explore Aalborg is on foot. Most attractions are concentrated within easy walking distance. The inner city has both modern architecture and old, beautiful buildings from the renaissance. Cobbled streets and charming squares. There are plenty of art in side streets, back yards and parking lots.

The factory workers used to live in this part of town where the buildings used to be grey and dull. But the area has some amazing and exciting murals. This mural is rather melancholic. I think the dark expression fits into this gray, monotonous industrial residential area.

Both of these murals were done on the same wall. The postman is the one still here. But who knows, he might be gone when I return....

This piece is called «Meeting her Parents» painted by a polish artists. A young boy standing in front of the door, ready to meet her parents. But look closely. A rat is eating from the bouquet of flowers!

No other name than «The Lighthouse» could be the name of this large mural.

An Australien did this piece and named it «Silver Skies». The artist likes to create his own universe with mystical creatures, who communicate through shape, color, movement and texture.

I am not sure about this one. It is large with a lot of details. Humans and nature mixed together.

I do not know who the artist is, but he or she might be from Greenland. The image of an Inuit with a seal and fish.

Many of the murals were painted as part of the We Aart festival, which has been held for some years now. It is a private initiative. The intention is to make Aalborg's urban environment more exciting. International artists are invited to contribute to art which can change the cityscape.

Aalborg is definitive a city where you can let yourself be amazed and admire all aspects ot the city as well.

Most of these Graffiti are awesome and full of incredible details. It's amazing to see such incredible pieces popping up all over the main European cities! 😃

Looks like I'll have to add Aalborg to my bucket list. 😉

Thanks for these amazing photos, @digi-me!

Thank you.

Wow! These graffiti are amazzzzinnngg :O. They really are a work of art, the ones that you captured that is, since I've seen a lot of junk grafitti where I travel to slummy suburbs.

Did you have to travel a lot to capture these? Or are they nicely bunched together somewhere in Aalborg?

thanks. Yes they are all in walking distance . I know there are more in the outskirts of town. I have passed when taken the buss. One day I have to get off the buss....The murals in Aalborg are considered world class. Many more really great ones.

Thanks a lot :)

Regards @digi-me.
Extraordinary street art.
The giant insect, I stir in my brain.
I think he's curious to explore.
Without awareness of the terror it causes. :)

Thanks for stopping by. That insect is gigantic. I think you are right. He is just curious. Means no harm. You can see that in the way he is looking and touching that smaller creature

Oh yeah
thanks for confirm.
Happy life.

Hey, @digi-me.

That all looks amazing. And most of it is so huge! I would imagine it took days with some of them, or dozens of manhours if there were more than one working on them. The fact that they can be painted over and something else put in their place is also cool. It changes the look of the building and the area around it, keeping things fresh and new.

I've never been a fan of tagging or graffiti. I think it shows a lack of respect. However, street art is some of the best and beautiful works of imagination and creation that I've ever seen, and when done on such scale, it just elevates everything in its vicinity.

My family on my Dad's side came to the U.S. from Denmark several generations ago. I've never been, but it's on the list of places to visit. Now you've given me more reason to go. :)

Thank you for your comment. Yes, most of them are huge, covering the whole wall. Since the inner city (also the historic part of town) it is easy walkable. At the same time you do a historic walk, you will come across many, many murals as well. You do not need to do a street art tour first and doing the historic later. They can be combined.

Yes, once graffitti was considered vandalism. To day is popular. Now you can do guided walking tours in most cities just to see street art. The way we look at it has certainly changed.

I am originally Danish. Born and raised just outside Aalborg, but living in Norway. But I often go there to visit family. If you haven't been there, maybe it is time :) It is a small country, travelling is easy. Hope you do some day.
