[ART] Masterclass on drawing a picture expressing an idea
This masterclass is not so much about drawing techniques, but rather about the idea of the image and the selection of necessary shapes and colors. This time I wanted to show something that exist, but at the same time is impossible. I do not even know how the idea came to me, but it seemed to me very interesting to draw a seascape, and to depict jellyfish in the sky, as a continuation of the blue, which would become sea for them.
It resulted in such a three-storied picture: the earth, the sea, the sky (which is like the sea).
To implement the idea, I rummaged in my photos and found one of Thailand. I'm on the observation deck in it, gesticulating something. The photo ideally suited to my artistic fantasies. Then I decided that the picture should be revived by a human character and I added a girl, that was completely redone me. Her outfit, both in color and shape, indirectly echoed the images of jellyfish.
I will not say that I coped with drawing very quickly. I spent full three evenings drawing, correcting and working on the details on the canvas. It was laborious, however.
This is how my work looks like, 50 x 70 cm in size, which I called «Different worlds»:
And now the process step by step.
A small story about the canvas. After I took the film off of it, it seemed to me that it was some kind of strange, because it felt like a banner where advertising materials were usually printed. Pretty slippery and a bit plastic, it did not cause trust in me. And not in vain, because, as it turned out along the process, it was not easy to draw on it. I'm glad that in an impulse to get more, I did not buy a dozen of them as they were on sale.
After doing a light sketch with a pencil, I proceeded to paint the sky. I did this with a wide synthetic brush, using white, liaght and dark blue colors.
I want to apologize for the quality of the process photos. As I drew in the evening, the lighting was not the best, and besides, I photographed on the phone. Sorry for the plastic effect of the images.
To create a sharper contrast between the sea and the sky, I added warm hues to the sky, turning it into a sunset. I also tried to blur the horizon so that the transition was smooth and fuzzy.
I painted the islands and land at first with dark green and beige colors, and then proceeded to draw the hills and valleys, thereby changing the tonality of the forest part and making it lighter.
Then it was turn of the foreground. It did not have to become vivid and bright and take a lot of attention. Simply, it had to be, with small interspersions of colors, so the bushes and palm leaves just differ slightly in their tone from the background.
Then I proceeded to the image of the girl. As I already wrote, her appearance indirectly intersected with the forms of jellyfish, which means that her clothes should have been more or less lush. I dressed her in a blouse with ruffles and a skirt with folds. On her head there was a white hat, on her hands she had a manicure and her lips were covered with the lipstick. Like a true lady. I should say, that I forgot to draw her hair, and I remembered that when I almost finished the painting. But it's good that I remembered it at all.
Now the jellyfish. They had to be a continuation of the clouds, as if emerging from them. For this I have depicted the clouds as hemispherical. I did not throw the hatchet with the number of jellyfish and painted five units. Well, and the hair of a lady, of course.
