Hello Steemians!

Today we landed on Lesson 5 !.. I know last episode was named Lesson 3 .. but it wasn't! :)

This lesson will be about 'Asaro Heads' .. I bet all of you have once heared about it or saw one.
They represent a simplified version of the human face. Which is perfect for studying the planes of the face, the anatomy and how light falls over it.

Studying Asaro Heads will help you alot with your facial anatomy/proportions and eventually being able draw believable faces from imagination.

(This image is not mine, it is here to show an example of a pencil study of an asaro head.)

When we start out drawing we usually aren't great at guessing/feeling the right proportions of the face.
Usually it leads to faces being to cramped or the perspective/form of the face isn't right.

Studying Asaro Heads together with a solid book on anatomy for artists ( like: Andrew Loomis - Drawing the head and hands) will make you improve incredibly fast. Drawing/Painting is mostly about the knowledge on how to draw something then the practice itself.

Of course you have to put in the hours moving the pencil, but KNOWING how something is supposed to be drawn is probably more valuable than slaving away hour after hour.. That is why I usually also focus on the Theoretical part of drawing and painting.. Learning about the anatomy, light and shadow, materials, composition etc.. All that fundamental knowledge is learned and then put into practice.. not the other way around :)

So how do we start to make a drawing like this?!
Here we go:

If you draw these larger and take a bit more time you can make them look really pretty :D

Here is the video of me painting an Asaro Head study and talking a bit more about the usefulness of doing these sort of studies.

Thank you for watching!
See you at Lesson 6 !

Cheers
Rogier

That looks really nice. I agree with you that proper knowledge of the fundamentals is crucial, even before practice. It allows you to practice the right way, when you get to it!

exactly! Well said :D

Nice tutorial! I've always thought drawing heads is super-hard. I'll definitely try it your way.

Thanks :) Yeah practice makes perfect ;) just try and see how it goes :D
