Art for Comic Cons

in #art8 years ago

Hey everyone! :)

As some of you might know I sometimes go to 'Comic-Cons' where I often reside in the Artist Alley, trying to sell prints and sometimes some merch.

I don't really do this for the money as I really just pick my specific cons where I wanna go (often have a good excuse to travel ;) )

I do these purely for the fun of it, if I make a few bucks on the side, thats nice! But i never aim to walk away with a fat profit.. playing it even is best most of the times ! :)

One thing I notice on these cons is that the age of people seem to be getting younger,, and especially here in The Netherlands/Europe, they seem to be way more interested in Anime-shows than comics.
You see tons of people cosplaying characters I've never seen or heard of before,, which is quite cool but also, for me, a worrying trend.

Rarely do I meet a young person at my booth who is interested in art that relates superheroes, cartoon characters or games. They seem to be just wanted art that has to do with Anime.

Not to diss or be super negative about it, but often the Anime/Manga artists in the artist alley are not very 'good' artists. They often lack fundamental knowledge of what they draw and paint which is sometimes painfully clear.

Where the face is lit from the left and the rest of the body is lit from the right, anatomical issues, super strange heads etc.. I sound like a shitty art teacher right now.. I know! But unfortunately this is often the case :/

The worrying trend for me comes mostly about young people not being interested in anything comic/game related. There is a very very small niche which they all seem to be interested in.

For games - its Overwatch & League of Legends
For film - nothing
For cartoons - Just anything anime.. but mostly Naruto and Dragonball

So as an Artist Alley artist this worries me, because if I want to turn a little profit, break even.. or even have people come to my booth .. I have to try and cater to these interests.

Dilemma's as I'm not really interested in either Overwatch, LoL or anime! :)

I think I have to just stick to my own Old School 90's cartoons, comic art and games and hope more people of my age go and visit these cons!

80's and 90's kids.. Please go out to your nearby comics-cons and support your local non-anime artists! :D

Thanks for reading my rant! :)

Cheers

Some example of work/prints that sometimes people don't even know who/what it is! :'(

I find that a lot of the artists are in artist's alley for the same reason you are; it's a fun way to pocket some spare change just doin' what they love :] Having known these kinds of young artists, many of them are not looking to pursue their art hobby as a profession. They're just content to engage in an active fandom, receiving validation (sometimes in the form of cash) and positive energy from people who enjoy the same things they do. I think it's really wonderful, actually! Even if I don't personally know all the new series and characters comin' out these days...
It's been years since I've attended a convention as a merchant, however. I can understand the frustration of being part of the "previous" generation, and feeling like your work and interests noe flies over the heads of the currently active/engaged generation.

I think there are bad arts in every genre, let's not even start on Liefeld's feet and proportions XD

But yeah, there are definitely bad arts in anime, also.

The good thing is there are also good arts in every genre \o/

I hope you will get more success in artist alleys in the future, Rogier :)

Why whatsup? :O

XD CLASSIC !!!!!

Liefeld is such a hero lmfao when ever I feel down on my own work, I look to him for inspiration... If people could take him and his work seriously, then everyone's got a shot for the same respect! :D

He gave us Deadpool so he's good by me :D

amen to that!

I can see how that would be concerning if you made money from these cons! Good thing you don't really? XD

That trend might have been going for a while. One of the first things I noted on da was that you either had to be amazingly good or doing anime (generally didn't matter what your skill was like) to be popular and this was forever ago.

you are totally right :D i think DA is quite a good example of how european comic con artist alleys look like :P

Wow, really impressed with your prints. Good luck on next cons, though it's true you not only have to be good at what you're doing, but also select the right niche

Thank you @longer i'm sure it will be alright.. i just got to get a bit more 'famous' in the art world :D

I love the Samurai Pizza Cats!!! :DDD

I love the Anime and when I was younger I only made drawings about it, but I realized that if I really wanted to learn and be good at what I like, I had to put it aside or draw anime only occasionally.

I hope that in your next events you have many clients in your booth, admiring what you do.

Haha, i'm sure it will be fine :)

Phuh, Superheroes. So boring. I never understood the people who lilked them.

If you think that anime artists are bad, you probably only see the fans. And "fan made" is seldom a quality approval.

Anyway, sorry for you, but what started 15 years ago will not go away.

Yes, exactly what I said.

i dont think anime artists are bad at all. Jus tthe ones you see in the artist alley are often not very good :D which is fine, everyone needs to learn.. but it sometimes looks like they exploit the 'fans' .. people are fan of it so they buy anything related to it since there not that much on the market anyway. here in europe anyway*
