PAINTING TECHNIQUES #2 - Mischtechnique (a step by step TUTORIAL with oil and casein - Part II.)

in #art6 years ago

In the last part I wrote a little bit about the "Mischtechnique" in general and showed you the first steps of my very first finished oil painting. I ended part #1 with the step "bringing back the whites" on top of the first yellow glaze. After I was finished with all this white areas, small hetchings and building up more dimensions, it was time for another glaze in blue; but this time it shouldn't be a whole-canvas-glaze...

Instead, I decided to do local glazes in the sky and the smoke. The blue in the sky is a caribean blue mixed with some brilliant yellow and titanium white. Some parts in the smoke are glazed much cooler. I added some cobalt blue and mixed it just with white. In the next step I brought in some darks, because I wanted to bring the figure more forward. I was curious about how it will pop out more. You can see this effect especially at the foot-area.

Well, I remember this stage.... to good... I wanted to make the sky brighter to create more space in the landscape and what happened? - the paint lifted off. You barley can see it on the left side. It was horrible. I had to let it try and redid it afterwards. In the next step I played with different shades of greens and painted the landscape. I also painted some blue in between to give it more harmony. After this I gave the hourglass more darks. I was ready for my first red glaze in the robe and painted afterwards the band of the book. This was really a thrill, cause I didn't know how the red will work. For the apple I have chosen a different red, a special one, Old Hollands golden baroque red, one of my favourite colours.

In the next steps I began with the throne, step by step with different scumbles. In the next step I painted the skin tones and the hair. I wanted to bring in some brilliant yellow and also some purple, because I also added those colours in the throne and other areas. But with the beams in the background, which i did before, I wasn't satisfied. I made up my mind, what I can do with them.... but there also where other spots, which wantet me to paint on... I didn't like the weak red of the robe and the sloppy way I painted the sky. The candle wasn't popping out enough, the smoke wasn't bright enough and ivory white of the skulls should be more bright too. So I tried to fix all these spots.

When I was finished with everything, I was really proud :-)
