CCTV - sand sculpture

in #art7 years ago

Do you ever get a feeling someone is watching you. Well I do and i'ts not something I feel too comfortable about. We only have to walk from one end of a city street to the other to be plastered all over monitors in some dark room somewhere. I don't care what everyone say about me, I am not a paranoid person, , but the CCTV cameras surrounding us makes me feel uneasy knowing that at any moment I could be stalked and followed as I go about my daily life. The worst thing is, I know this because if I had these tools I would probably be doing the same. Just for the shits and giggles.

I made this piece along with fellow Irish sculptor Alan Magee in Rorschach, Switzerland and part of a fun competition. As artists Alan and myself had explored the idea of Surveillance and Voyeurism in our own work and when we came together to decide what to make we threw a few ideas around and came up with this. Alan tackled the front electronic eye and I did the ominous figure inside.

I thought he should be like he was part of the machine, as if he was some 'Matrix' like figure. Surrounded by monitors, giving him an all seeing view of the world. He appears to be tapping one the monitor because of a loss of signal though in fact for the sculpture I wanted to use his finger to support the dome of televisions.

The sand is really nice in Rorschach but I wasn't willing to take the risk of total collapse in the short time we had to make the sculpture. So extending the arm to create a support seemed like a good solution. I'm not really sure if people understood our Idea but we had a great time making it beside a beautiful lake in the sun.

Ps

What a roller coaster of a week with cryptos going nuts and me trying to start my own small little coin portfolio. I have decided that for now I will be taking a 50/50 split on my payouts and using the steem dollars to invest in some other currencies namely EOS, @dan s new baby. I really love his philosophy and expect great things when it's up and running. Steemit will always be my first love but I want to learn more about this world and the best way is to learn by doing. ( I don't know why I just typed that and I should probably now do a disclaimer about this not being financial advice and to do you own due diligence). Anyway here are some of my recent posts. All comments welcome.

Very nice (big) brother :-)

Thank you Alain.

Incredible sculpture. I like how you tackled this one with a partner and made a great concept to accomplish that while making it easy to both work at the same time.
This is one of my favorites. The last gaming themed sculpture was pretty fantastic as well, with a clever element of interaction.

It can be difficult to work with other people on the same object. It can slow things down because you have to talk about what you're going to do all the time and get in each others way. The way we worked on this was much more free once we had decided on the big picture.
Thank you as always for checking out my work.

Amazing sand sculpture and interesting concept considering the medium. I love the sea, live on it and am often in and around it, so sand has a special place in my life. It is nice to see it used in this way. Well done.

Thank you, Yes the sea is very special for me also. I love to dive and explore this wet dimension. It is just too cold in Ireland for it to become a favourite pass time.

I love this one. It wasn't obvious at first (to me) what it is but the vision is really great. I still am at a loss to comprehend how you accomplish these structures with sand.

Good luck in the crypto coin portfolio journey. I was listening to a podcast this morning and it talked about a new asset class, Crypto Collectables (aka Cryptokitties). I am sure there will be Crypto Art as an asset class too in the future.

Thank you and thanks for reading.
One of the things I like about ephemeral sculpture is that nobody can own them but years ago I did think about producing some video art which could not be copied and lived in it's own display device and that could be only looked at by one person at a time. Maybe these new crypto blockchain technologies will begin to inspire new art types entirely.
