A very brief history of sculpture - sand sculpture

in #art5 years ago (edited)

This was a project were I feel like I did loads but in actually fact did very little. It was for the 2003 Duncannon sand sculpture festival where we had quite a large group of carvers with us due to previously having them already in the country for our project in Dublin castle.

Too many cooks spoil the sand so I let everyone carve away and acted as a support crew. During the event I had another mission to do also and that was install a permanent sculpture Fergus Mulvany and myself made for the village you can read about it in the posts linked at the bottom of the page.

To be very honest I can only remember carving the wall like structure connecting all of the sculptures together. But as I'm sure you'll agree it is a beautiful wall.

The idea we wanted to convey was the history of sculptors going back in time from the Renaissance to primitive times.

At the start we had a nude marble sculpture with a guy chipping away at her feet. This was nicely carved by @stijgerart and Edith Van der weterring. (The Nether regions/ lands)

Next came some Celtic lads making some sort of Ogham stone made by Niall Magee and Colin Thompson (Scotland)

Caroline De St. olive (France) mad this woman making' Venus of Hohle Fels' The earliest known Sculpture of a person.

and Nuria Vallverdu Villagines (Catatonia) made this cave man scratching away on a bit of rock.

Fergus and myself, when not installing our permanent sculpture did all the other bits and bobs to join things together. From making the first hand print that started man on his quest for art making to the amazing wall and timeline showing icons of important events that happened along the way as man got progressively more in-tune with making things.

Nothing more to say really except, we all had a jolly good laugh.

I always find those sand sculptures amazing. Especially since I fail at the simplest castle on the beach :D

In all honesty I am pretty rubbish at making sand castles also. All those straight lines drive me crazy.

Somehow I get the feeling that after finishing a castle like this it’d be like .... Nah, I’m not so good at castles... haha

Sand statues are fascinating but so fragile. Those looks amazing! I have only seen the real sand statues once. It was some exhibition in Italy many years ago. It's nice to see what can be made out of something so easily taken away by wind as sand :)

Choosing the right sand is the most important thing for strength. At this project we are lucky that the beach sand is quite good and similar to some of the sand along the coast of Italy. For me the fact that they are temporary is what I like most about it. It means it is as much a performance as it is about the sculpture and when your work dissolved away it means you get too do more. Thanks for your comment.

Neat! I’ve heard about these, but never lived in a community that did one and I’ve always wanted to go. Thanks for sharing these photos - I love the Falling Asleep one right at the very end - so cool and modern!

Thank you so much. There are many projects around the world during the year. Maybe you can start one and send me an invite.

Such wonderful sculptures, I love the design and the forms very much. The craftsmanship is gorgeous, as well <3 A wonderful artwork <3 <3 <3

Thank you very much Veryspider. (Love your username)
