Prairie House
Following the acquisition of a single-storey house dating back to the 1950s in St-Lambert, Quebec, the clients wanted to enlarge and renovate this "Prairie house" inspired building and appealed to the architects of naturehumaine.
The existing house is partially demolished and then rebuilt, reinterpreting in a contemporary manner the original features such as a low profile, an overhanging roof and the use of masonry and wood facade. The roof is covered with zinc finished steel, while the facades are dressed in St-Marc limestone and inserts of cedar slats. The monolithic chimney stands out as the main element piercing the facade, in a will of extension between the interior living spaces and the garden.
Responding to customers' desire to create spacious and bright living spaces, the ground floor layout includes a single bedroom adjoining a study and bathroom. Designed with transparency and lightness, all the living spaces are surmounted by a cathedral ceiling, 4.8m high at its highest point. In the spirit of inducing a visual fluidity, the entrance vestibule is delimited by a glass enclosure, bent in frames of white painted steel.
