Photo Short: Architectural Photography In A Bangkok Subway Station

I took today’s Photo Short in Bangkok, Thailand. It’s taken inside one of the MRT underground railway stations. I had caught the last train of the night and as I was exiting the station, I realised I was all alone in this large open space. I liked the symmetry and the diminishing perspective, so I decided to take a quick photo.

It was dark, and I was not carrying my tripod, so I tried a few shots at high ISO settings. I had to be quick because the station was about to shut. Just before I left I tried one last shot at ISO200 (the lowest native setting on the camera) handholding at 1/8 of a second. Not ideal with an old camera and lens lacking image stabilisation. But, to my surprise this last photo turned out to be the best. I later used Photoshop to set a 16:9 crop and add a slight blue tint to the shadows and yellow to the highlights. I used Niks collection to add a vignette effect.

The MRT (underground) and BTS (overground) trains are a good way to get around the Thai capital. One tip I’d give you would be to buy a prepaid card. You can get temporary or permanent rechargeable cards depending on how long you’re staying. It’s worthwhile because it can save you a lot of time avoiding the long queues to buy single journey tokens.
