The Beginning of a Saga! Final Fantasy (1987)

What's up! This post is written as an entry to an Archdruid Community contest about games from the 80s! If you are interested in participating, check it out here!

This game defined many childhoods, not only for those that played the first one but of those that played the other games in the saga as well. What was initially called Figther Fantasy and eventually got it's name changed to Final Fantasy is the beginning of an amazing saga that changed gaming forever.

For many people (I include myself in this group) Final Fantasy I was NOT our first entry into the series, my first entry into the series was Final Fantasy VIII and it stands as one of my favorite games of all time, hence my name here but that doesn't mean Final Fantasy I doesn't hold a special place in my heart!

When this game was released, I was not even born yet and by the time I played it, it was almost 2 decades old considering I played it around 2006-2007, way after I got into Final Fantasy thanks to Final Fantasy VIII. I had the luck of playing the Game Boy Advance version of this game, on my good ole Game Boy Advance SP, a console that is usually forgotten because a lot of people went from the Game Boy Advance to the Nintendo DS!

I know that a lot of people had trouble getting into the game, especially due to lack of tutorials and sometimes you weren't really clear on where you had to go and some people where just not used to the turn based combat but since back them I was addicted to Pokemon, it was easy for me to adapt to the "archaic" combat system and lack of guidance in general.

I feel it's pretty unfair to try and compare the story of the game to the stories of recent Final Fantasy games since this game was released in 1987 and it has, by today standards, a pretty basic fantasy story but I'm pretty sure it was pretty ground breaking by the late 80s! I mean you had multiple classes with various meaningful skills, a relatively easy to follow story and an over-world map inspired by the first Zelda title released just a year prior! Yes! This game was made back in the day where you could get a game finished in a couple of months!

This game might not get the recognition it deserves sometimes but this game was the first stone in the amazing castle that we know today as the Final Fantasy series and the world wouldn't be the same without it! These days you can even play it on your Iphone or Android phone if you want to! It's available on multiple virtual consoles as well and it is a worth while game to play if you want to experience early Final Fantasy history and early JRPG history as well :-D

The world of RPGs wouldn't be the same after all if Square hadn't taking the chance at releasing it!

Sort:

Square Enix is by far one of my favorites RPG developers and my favorite JRPG developer, they keep releasing titles and I just love all of them, it's hard to imagine that this one was their first attempt so long ago!

I feel personally called out by this post. :p

I started playing this saga in FF IV until the last, there are some that I did not like but they are still my favorite games!
