Nothing much for me to say at this point so let's get this one rolling!

7. Sword Art Online: Alicization

Genres: Action, Adventure, Fantasy, Game, Romance

Studio: A-1 Pictures

It is that time again, the time to divide the community into two - I love SAO and SAO is trash factions; start another online bickering and whining that will not come into any amicable resolution because neither side refuses to give an inch and acknowledge each others point of view… But I don’t care about all those commotion, let me just enjoy some good anime…

hmm… not bad, animation is above par, the soundtrack is still as good as the previous installments… hmm this story… doesn’t look bad in the least, in fact aside from the slow pace and Kirito just being Kirito, all I can see is a well directed and indulging story that is slowly sucking me in its world, by the way have I mentioned how cool that bro fist at the opening song is? Well now I just did.

As someone who hasn’t read the source material, I am quite curious as to why fans of the series hails this arc the best one from the franchise so far and from the first half of the first episode alone, I already had my answer to that question. The first few minutes of the episode confused me because of Kirito appearing as a young boy and having a no-homo wrestling battle with a blonde boy of about the same age as him, named Eugeo. The start of the episode is different from how I remembered the show, there are no traces of the other characters appearing from the first 2 seasons like Asuna, Suguha, and best grill Klein and not just that, even the world that they presented is a completely new one from the world of Sword Art Online, Alfheim and GGO. I honestly thought that this is a completely detached story from the original series but I was proved wrong when everything comes full circle at the end of the episode, but it was nonetheless a really intriguing world that they have presented and I am thinking about how the advancement in the technology in the story, especially when they mentioned accelerating time, would connect to the author’s other work, Accel World.

The animation of the series makes me feel like I am watching a movie because of how polished and how eye pleasing it is. The action scenes still deserves praise especially during that goblin fight episode, it is more than the animation, the choreography is definitely the bigger player during that fight in my opinion. Though it is not like it is all praises for me, I am of course bothered by the fact that Kirito can still do great feats just because he is Kirito, however during his goblin fight, with him shivering and being consumed by fear is truly a step up from his usual “I can take care of anything and everything” disposition and that earned this season additional plus points for me. Another plus point for Asuna finally doing things again and escaping from the damsel in distress treatment she got after the first arc of the first season.

I am well aware that this show has always been a subject of controversy, but I would like to at least implore you guys to try this season out before totally dissing it for a petty reason that it is called SAO, the story looks promising and I have been hearing rumors that this will run for a good 50 episodes, the kind of treatment that I honestly think the first arc also deserves. Anyway just give it a shot and decide by then, don’t follow popular opinions and learn to decide a show’s value by your own assessment.

8. Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai (Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai)

Genres: Comedy, Romance, School, Supernatural

Studio: CloverWorks

One of my late discoveries this season that I would have regretted had I not explored thoroughly enough to stumble upon this refreshingly unique show because I seriously can’t get enough of how well the characters are interacting in this one, especially the main guy that got the best lines and retorts that he can climb the level that Hachiman, Araragi and Kyon has achieved or maybe he already has?

kbjeq6ynjd.png

The story has been compared to Monogatari’s by a lot of people, while some compares it to Haruhi's and I can see why it comes down to that, we have a guy that is solving problems of various girls, not just any ordinary problems, they have abnormal problems that is hard to explain from a logical standpoint which totally sounds like what Monogatari did, then there's that Endless Eight tribute/ gimmick that gave me deja vu of The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The originality of the story can really be put into question by keen observers and people who have too much time on their hands, however the story is not really what pulled me and allowed me stay on this show, I am all in for this one because of the bunny girl in the poster how the characters are being articulated, the show is funny not in the same way as Asobi Asobase or any gag heavy anime shows for that matter, it is funny because the guy delivers the words or phrases that I, at the back of my mind, am looking for. The show is unique not because it presented a totally new concept or premise like Zombieland Saga but because of the characters that doesn’t move in a predictable pattern and it is always entertaining how they tackled cliche developments and turned that experience into a complete different one as compared to the multitude of other shows that used the same cliche set up only to arrive at the same destination.

As what you can tell, this show, story-wise isn’t all that unique despite using mysteries and stuff like Schrodinger’s cat and Laplace demon but it makes up for that with a set of characters that does things in a manner that is both entertaining and fulfilling to watch, the show also excelled in the drama department, its first 3 episodes are so well done you could actually mistake the third episode as the season’s finale and I wouldn’t mind that as an ending but of course having more episodes to look forward to is always welcome as well.

9. Golden Kamuy 2nd Season

Genres: Action, Adventure, Historical, Seinen

Studio: Geno Studio

After a quick three-month break we are finally getting the much awaited continuation of Golden Kamuy and it is still full of…mysteries?

g2bj89twpa.png

The show started in a weird way, really weird but looking back the show has always been weird in the first place, it is just that this second cour is definitely a storey above the first when it comes to it. Weird stuff aside the show is still delivering those high tension scenes with numerous powerful individuals seeking to claim the stash of gold for themselves and realize their desires. The twists and turns proved to be still a cut above the rest but the animation is still dopey at times though bearable (insert CGI bear flashbacks), no pun intended.

jz0y103it3.png

One realization I had when watching this show is how almost every one in the show can hold their own even against the protagonist himself and other boss type characters, I am not saying that the main guys are so weak that even unnamed background characters can take them on but it is about how this is a more realistic depiction of how a fight between seasoned veterans that served as soldiers in a time of war would usually go down. Even though the main guys definitely are stronger than most of the fodder characters, they just don’t go down like moths approaching fire but instead they put in a good hit or two before the fight is ultimately decided and at times it doesn’t even have a clear victor. A good example of this is how Hijikata that was being depicted as a boss type character with both the wits and power has been pinned down by one of Tsurumi’s man.

Well nothing more I can add here but it is definitely a hit for people that like survival kind of shows that occasionally hits you with the feels when these tough guys recollects about their dreadful past in the battlefield and how the war they faught totally ruined them as humans, it is a great all around show that goes deep when needed and makes you realize that war can never be justified, but it is sad to see that it happened, it is happening and will definitely happen in the forseeable future.

10. Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet (Boarding school Juliet)

Genres: Action, Comedy, Romance, School, Shounen

Studio: LIDENFILMS

I never expected this show would be so entertaining that I would be writing about it. I honestly went in the show because I am a sucker for romcoms and harem shows, ok I admit it, but I never knew this would give me the good old harem anime feeling back in those days when ecchiness was still not an integral part of the harem genre, well maybe it was only at a tolerable amount back then.

The show is about Persia and Inuzuka, two high schoolers that attend the same school but unfortunately are from different affiliations, Romeo and Juliet anyone? Well that is the story’s reference as far as I can tell because their complete name are Juliet Persia and Romio Inuzuka. However the show takes that story and make the conflict more “physical”, yeah they and their respective groups beat the crap out of each other for real, this in turn made some people to compare this show with Nisekoi for more than obvious reason, but personally I am seeing a mix of Nisekoi and Majikoi on this one. The plot sounds ridiculous in paper but we all know here that anime, most of the time, makes those ideas completely viable to be more accurate I think that is what anime has been known for doing all this time lol.

f30chgo247.png

Though I am a sucker for shows under the harem tag, it is really not something I could easily recommend because more often than not, ecchi comes along with it that is why having a show like this really is a life saver for me since I can put it out in the open without worrying about the authorities tracking me down lol. In a serious note though, this is a great show especially if you are into romcoms like me, you know that a harem series is really well done when people gets attached and root for one of the characters to actually be the one to reach the happy ending just like in the case of Re: zero and Nisekoi, though sometimes they get out of hand and destructive.

This is the only part I don't like about harem shows, when a good ship sinks to the bottomless sea of rejection. RIP.

That wraps my Fall 2018 list, in case anyone have any violent reactions or anything of the sort, feel free to voice it out in the comments section. Tha's all from me today so see you again next week.

Ciao~

Sort:

I read the source material before it was cool. Screw me right? It's bad writing imo but it's still something the helped me pass the time. I mean, there are a lot of potentials missed and created in the source material. I'm going to watch the new season and hopefully do enjoy a decent story tell.

Never heard of the other titles but the review looks promising. I'll add them later on some to watch list.

It is being faithful to the source is what most viewers says so I think you really did lol, but seeing it in top notch animation is never a bad thing so at least you can, maybe, enjoy that part.

I would personally put the one with the long ass title as my most recommended series this season, hope you like it hehe

Loving this season animes, specially SSSS Gridman, Uchi no Maid ga Uzasugiru!, Seishun Buta Yarou wa Bunny Girl Senpai no Yume wo Minai and Kishuku Gakkou no Juliet

This season rather this year has been a good one for the anime industry imo, seishun buta yarou so far is my number 1 this season but many titles come close.

although i am not a fan of sao, i didn't like any of the season i dare to say this one is quite good. Also i really like golden kamuy!

I am quite entertained by it as well, such a shame though that it is still getting the beating just because it is SAO, hating is too mainstream lol.

And golden kamuy's a well rounded show but the bits of the characters past is totally the highlight for me, powerful and leaves an impression.

and golden's manga is even better! more details and the "gore" scenes are actually gore in the manga :P

That is really amazing how many anime series in production and many of them already running for a while, I can imagine how people get used to them and it becomes a part of your daily life too. Many of anime’s really have a great story behind and our human problems as well as our emotions and conflict, may be sometimes because we recognize ourselves we just get fond of them. Like you mentioned yourself, in some of them the producers paid a great attention to the scenes around and it is just enjoyable to watch it too. Thank you for this list and like how you went into details in each separate series.

Thanks for taking the time to read it too, it makes me writing about anime worthwhile when I find people who appreciate what I am doing :)
