Les lépidoptères volants, communément appelés papillons, ont deux ailes membraneuses et sont couvertes d'écailles colorées, elles les utilisent pour la thermorégulation, la cour et la signalisation, bien qu'il existe aussi des espèces nocturnes telles que les mites, les sphinx ...
Dans la cour les mâles font des expositions et avec leurs vols ils les couvrent aux femelles avec l'odeur de leurs phéromones, une autre donnée est que les mâles peuvent éviter que la femelle ait une nouvelle copulation est capable de boucher leurs parties génitales avec une sécrétion collante.
Il y a plus de 165 000 espèces et le plus grand papillon diurne est la femelle Ornithoptera alexandrae, qui atteint une hauteur de 31 cm et vit dans le sud-est de la Nouvelle-Guinée.
Leurs larves sont connues sous le nom de chenilles et sont généralement nourries avec du matériel végétal dans lequel elles jouent le rôle de pollinisateurs de plantes et de cultures.
