WHAT A PLEASANT SURPRISE - THE MUSCOVY DUCKLINGS ARE HATCHING

in #animals7 years ago

When we returned from our visit with @mericanhomestead the other day, our fun did not stop!

Upon arriving back at home and checking the animals, I happened to notice something. Our mama Muscovy duck that had been sitting on her eggs had finally gotten a return on her investment. Two of her eggs had already hatched!

At first I thought that one duck and one chick had hatched, because there were a few chicken eggs mixed in and one of the little ones was yellow. However, it just happened to be a yellow duckling, while the other one was more brown.

Muscovy ducks can have quite a variety in coloration including white, brown, black and gray. We have two adults that are black and white and this mama which is gray and white.

We really like these Muscovy Ducks for many reasons. First of all, they were given to us for free by our neighbors so we could start our own flock. Now, they are already reproducing. They mate and brood well on their own, so the process pretty much runs itself and we don't need interfere to have them reproduce.

The mothers take good care of the little ones, and these ducks are excellent foragers. Also, they grow to an impressive size, which means that there will be more meat if you want to eat them. The eggs can also be used for food just like chicken eggs can.

When these reasons are added together, we get a lot of potential for very little effort and investment. Obviously, we enjoy all of our animals, but the Muscovy Ducks are a very welcome addition to our livestock, and these new ducklings have got us excited about the future! We will keep you posted on how many more hatch and how they do growing up.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

Nice ones. Off topic: Do you know how to treat a chicken that was bite by a dog? She have one wound in the neck and is very stop

What I'd do is, buy some liquid medication and dab it on a cotton wool. Slowly dab the chicken while feeding her with what she likes.(lots of chickens like cooked rice.)

Hope this helps.

Though if its really bad, stop it from getting infected first or see s vet.

Thank you

you're welcome

Probably kill it and end it's suffering, if it's not ur pet.......

Hahaha, "proof of duckling" so adorable! Ducks are one of my faves (of cute animals I mean) and ducklings are just the freakin best.

Yeah, I love its little expression in that photo!

I know right??!!?? That photo is a gem, thanks for the post :)

How cool and insanely cute are they!!
Congratulations on your wonerful new addition to your family!
Have a stunning duck filled day my friend!

We were just looking at them again a little bit ago. It is hard to avoid the cuteness!

It is indeed!

True story. Several years ago, when I lived in Georgia, someone gave me 14 Muskovy ducks. There were 7 males and seven females. I did not understand at the time that Muskovys can have up to 24 eggs per clutch, three times a year. Within an embarrassingly short timeframe, I had over 100 Muskovy ducks. The hens can perch. I ended up with ducks on the roof, ducks in the trees, ducks on the fence, ducks on the cars, ducks on the neighbors cars, ducks on the neighbors roof, ducks in the road, ducks everywhere. It was a problem. Took us forever to find homes for all those ducks. I think some of their descendants may still live at a neighbors pond. Natural predation has kept him from having the same disaster that we did.

Have any more eggs hatched? Please post some new pictures. We love you all.

Not last we checked. Maybe we will post some fishing pictures today.

Later we will go to the turtle races!

That guy looks familiar!

I have to get my fix of homesteading from others......thank you much!!!!

At least you can! We will keep you fixed up!

you see duckies are good, because not only do they give you that non-threatening sense of security, but you can feed them crackers and you can ride them. Duckies are the horsies of the ocean

Papa,
I had been looking at getting Muscovy ducks but found a deal on some White Pekins that I couldn't pass up. Since then I have been offered some free Magpie Ducks as well. I had heard that Muscovies are extremely adept at eating mosquitoes, have you experienced that with your ducks? Also, how many eggs do your ducks produce in an average week? Thanks for the continued great posts. I tried to emulate you a bit when we had an endangered Blandings Turtle visit the homestead yesterday. I don't think I did you justice.

Oh YES!!! Ducks are th #1 livestock that I "want" on my homestead. Might not be the 1st we get, but they are what I want the most. Just love watching the little ducks waddle around. Talking quack quack quack. 😀

Have you followed Jack Spirko on The Survival Podcast, and his duck farm? In fact I am surprised that Jack isn't on Steemit. Maybe he is and I am just not aware of it.

Yay ducks!
