A HAPPY DAY FOR THE PAPA-PEPPER FAMILY - THE BABY BUNNIES ARE BORN!!!

in #animals8 years ago

The baby bunnies are born!!! The baby bunnies are born!!!

It’s been about a month since we bred our rabbits, and the babies have started to show up. We are still new at this (as are the new mothers), and until recently, I hadn’t had rabbits since I was a young boy. I remember breeding them once and getting a bunch of cute little baby bunnies, but that’s about all that I remember about it.

At the @papa-pepper homestead, we already have five mature rabbits. Brownie, Polkadot, and Runaway are the sisters of Cookie, as they all came from the same little. We bought those four off of a neighbor boy earlier this year. Then, @smailer bought us a beautiful female Chinchilla Rabbit, that our children named Silver.

We bred Silver with Cookie about a month ago, and borrowed an unrelated male named Bugs from that same neighborhood boy to breed with Brownie and Polkadot. We did not breed Runaway yet, but will next time.

When I mentioned that we were breeding our rabbits, @gringalicious shared a little of her experience doing that with us. The one thing that stuck out in my mind from what she shared was, “Don’t be surprised if they eat their babies, especially if they are first time mothers.” That information was little disturbing and surprising to hear, but I’m glad that we could hear about that possibility ahead of time.

Many rabbits can have a hard time with motherhood when it is their first time. Some will neglect their young and others may even kill them. Usually, they will eventually grow out of it as they have more litters. So far, our young mothers have had mixed results.

Unfortunately, Polkadot had her litter about a week earlier that she was supposed to, and none of those little ones survived. She had also chewed on at least one of them, which is unfortunate, but not unheard of. Thankfully, this was her first time having a litter, and hopefully things will go better for her next time.

POLKADOT:

Polkadot has recovered well.

RUNAWAY:

We will try to breed Polkadot again when we breed Runaway.

BROWNIE:

Brownie has not yet had her litter...

SILVER (With COOKIE):

But Silver did!!!

So far, both the new mama and the four babies are doing excellent, which is good news for everyone!

To make sure that she would be keeping the little ones warm at night and to help us keep an eye on her, we moved the young family into the house with us for now.

Here are the pictures.

I'll try to get some good pictures outside in the natural light as they grow, but I'm gone when the sun is out these days at work, so please be patient with me. I hope you enjoyed these ones anyway!

Here is one slightly blurry gif to end with.

As always, I'm @papa-pepper and here's the proof:

I had a wild rabbit who adopted our backyard. I'd go out at night with a flashlight to shoo her off before my pup ,Abbey, came out. That worked for a while, but then she got know my voice and would come bounding over...New plan needed!

Nice story!

We used to catch them in the flowerbeds and relocate them at our old house.

This is such an interesting and cute post. I was thinking the whole time when I had tried rabbit soup and wondered if you have also eaten rabbit soup or rabbit in general. It's a bit too gamey for me, but not bad. Too many bones.
I didn't want to mention it until I saw that even the mothers nibble, bite, snack on and even kill their own young ones. How horrifying indeed. Thanks for sharing. Big Upvote

Yeah, we eat rabbit too.

Both wild and domesticated.

Is there such thing as rabbit jerkey?

I think that you could make it, but I have never heard of it.

The venison jerky was great though!

I bet it was, do you spice it with peppers? if yes, which kinds? Me and my mom like to make hamburgers with chopped habaneros but I'm sure that's like sweet popcorn to you, either way it's a nice spicy kick, not too heavy for pepper indulgers.

You are a surprise box my friend, @papa-pepper I admire and congratulate your passion for nature, beautiful baby rabbits, congratulations for the new members of the family thanks for sharing this beautiful pictures.

I do try to keep it varied, and life provides a lot of opportunity.

Thanks @jlufer, I appreciate your continued support!

You deserve it, my great friend.

OH, yeah, plus... we got a surprise today!

oooooooh... what would that be?

New baby born to the same mama 2 days later!!!

Check newest post!

I think about the wind blowin' when I read your name @breezin so I made this.

You can use it as a logo/signature if you want, but you don't have to!

I just wanted to make it and see what it looked like!

FULL STEEM AHEAD!

Thank you so much for the signit! Yeah 23 ha more to harvest

Where do those come from?

We found a baby cottontail that we tried to raise, but he didn't make it. Sad day.

Yeah, many wild animals do not do well in captivity, and a lot of people learn that lesson the hard way.

We like to stick to the domesticated varieties ourselves.

Right. It was found in the open after cleaning an area up. No other pups were around. We figured it had been abandoned to the activity.

aww so cute, i want one :(

If you stop by, you can have one once they are weaned (we can always make more).

If i only have a super power to fly over there from philippines huhu 😭

So sad, and I cannot mail one that far....

So cute, I enjoy reading the story and looking at you're pictures, may the bubbies grow up to be healthy and well. Warm fuzzies. Bunnies Bunnies Bunnies!!! <3

Thanks for that! We are excited and the children are looking at them right now!

Too cute for words!

Except for those words!

;-)

Those babies are absolutely adorable! I better not show my daughter these pics or she'll want a bunny for Christmas. Which leads me to wonder: when you breed animals like this, do you keep them all or sell any to local area pet shops? Could be a fun little side business.

There is a market for rabbits around here, and a lot of the local kids breed them to sell around Easter, as that seems to be a great time to sell out quickly.

Heh, now that's a good holiday strategy, riding on the coattails of the Easter bunny!

Yeah, those kids got their stuff together!

Baby Bunnies!
Congratulations grand papa-pepper! They are adorable. I've never had bunnies before, but I have several friends who breed them. (Some to sell, some to eat, some for pets).

I think that we may be doing all three with our rabbits.

It certainly is a wonderful experience!
