Tasmanian Tiger
The thylacine commonly known as the Tasmanian tiger (because of its striped lower back) or the Tasmanian wolf was the largest known carnivorous marsupial of modern times and believed to have become extinct in the 20th century. Native places was in Australia, Tasmania and New Guinea.
The primary cause of extinction is hunting at massive scale and other causes includes epidemic diseases, emergence of wild dogs, and habitat loss.
Facts about Tasmanian Tigers,
- They lived in wetlands, grasslands, and eucalyptus forests of continental Australia.
- The tiger’s diet includes wallabies, wombats, kangaroos, possums, potoroos, as well as birds.
- They looked like short-haired dog that has a rigid tail.
- Had thick body hair with a length measuring up to 15mm
- Length of an adult Tasmanian tiger was 100 – 130 cm (excluding tail).
- The ears are 8 cm long and they are shielded with brown fur.
- The tail was about 50 -65 cm.
- Weight measuring at 20 – 30 kg
- Had 46 teeth but they were too weak.
- Females are slightly smaller compared to the males.
- Tasmanian Tiger used to hunt prey by using its sight, so they had remarkable vision.
