Scarlet Macaw
The scarlet macaw is a large red, yellow, and blue South American parrot. It is native to humid evergreen forests of tropical South America.
It has suffered from local extinction through habitat destruction and capture for the parrot trade, but locally it remains fairly common.
Scientific name : Ara macao
Food : This bird is an omnivore. It eats mostly plants, fruits, seeds and nuts. During the breeding season it also eats insects and Larvae.
Activity :They are diurnal. They sleep together at night in communal roosts of up to 50 burds. They lay eggs in tall trees and old woodpecker holes.
Territory : These birds live high in the rain forest canopy. In Costa Rica they are found mostly on the Pacific side of the country.
Interesting facts : The bright feather of these birds are primary red. Upper wings and tail feathers are shades of blue and yellow. In the wild they can live up to 30 years. They are in the family of true parrots, including the Mealy Parrot. They live in groups of 3 to 4 flock in a group.
