Blue Morpho Butterfly
Scientific name: Morpho peleides
Food: Adult butterfly favors the juices of rotting fruit or fungal growths. Caterpillar stage it eats plants from the pea family
Activity: They are diurnal. Their entire lifespan is only 115 days, so most of their time is devoted to eating and reproduction.
Territory: Mostly lived in rain forests. When you are flying over a tropical rain forest, you might see a group (also called a rabble, flutter, lek, or swarm) of butterflies sunning themselves on treetops. Rain forest destruction threatens the habitat of those butterflies.
- Interesting fact:
- The wings of these large butterflies have scales that reflects light and they sparkle like blue gems.
- They have dull brown with eyes on their underside of the winds for camouflage.
- Their wingspan is around 5 to 8 inches (12 to 20 centimeters).
