Australian Lizard Sunbathing on a Warm Spring Morning.

in #animals8 years ago (edited)

Travel anywhere throughout Australia and you will note that there are enourmous amount of lizards of varying shapes and sizes. Many of them are weird and wonderful, including the "Blue-tongue Lizard" i steemed about previously.

THIS GUY!

At first I thought he was a fairly common lizard known as a "Central Bearded Dragon" or "Frilly Lizard" which is found commonly throughout Australia. They get their name from the spiky skin under their neck which they can stick up prouder than a hipster's whiskers when they feel threatened.

However, after a bit closer looking I think that he is a closely-related cousin; the "Eastern Water Dragon". I can't see any semblance of a beard on the young lizard, plus the large ear and long toes on the back foot indicate that this is the swimming variety. I'm not a lizard expert so please correct me if I'm wrong.

Eastern Water Dragon

Water Dragons are very adaptable and are often found comfortably living in urban areas alongside humans. They simply need a hiding spot to live in, some water, and a place to catch some warm summer rays. They will live of insects when they are young and then vary their diet as they get older. This guy was only about 20cm long, but he will also grow much larger.

I spotted this guy on a lovely spring morning on southern Queensland. He wasn't the only one and i must have seen 5 or 6 this day. I like his shadow on the road and the inquisitive look and turn of his head. I hope you enjoyed my Aussie Lizard.
