The Eastern Blue-Tongued Lizard.

in #animals8 years ago

This is another unique and interesting animal from my homeland. Why is it called a blue-tongue lizard? Wait...and you will see.

The Eastern Blue-Tongued Lizard

These lizards are a type of skink, and are pretty commonly found in Australia, and as they are big, slow-moving and not really bothered by humans, they are quite easy to spot. We found this guy chilling out in the backyard without a worry in the world. This particular lizard looked fairly young as he was maybe only 8 inches long and his colouring hadn't fully developed. They will grow up to about a foot long, and they have an awkward-looking large head. They also have short legs, which may be why they don't bother trying to run away.

Blue-Tongue Lizard:

Blue-tongues are omnivores and will eat a variety of plant matter as well as any small animals that are unfortunate to stray into their path; mainly insects, caterpillars or other small lizards.

But Why is it called a "Blue-Tongue" Lizard?

This is why !

HAHA! It's great isn't it.

The main defense system for this lizard is his bright vivid blue tongue, which he will flash at you at threatened. Other than that, they do have strong jaws and if they bite, they often lock on and don't let go. Thankfully today, our little guy didn't feel threatened and we placed him back into the garden where he happily sat as if nothing had happened. I think this is one of my favourite lizards, hope you liked him too.
