AnimalPhotography - Greater Kudu
Kudu, or koodoo, is the Khoikhoi name for this antelope. You normally find these magnificent males in solitary, but if you're lucky like me you run into a bachelor group like this. I found this group grazing in the Addo Elephant National Park in South Africa.
Kudus are sometimes hunted and their horns used as trophy... a minimum of three turns in the horns mean 'trophy bull'. Their horns are also used as musical instruments and a horn of this shape, when used by soccer fans, is called kuduzela (a portmanteau of "kudu" and "vuvuzela"). STOPNice pictures. I saw them when we were in Sabi Sands and we even had one walking around our building when we came back from lunch one afternoon. Fantastic animals and beautiful.
Thanks. They can become quite tamed in areas where they are not hunted. In their natural territory it is sometimes tough to get close to them... during the day the love hanging out in gorges with dense vegetation.
Yeah, we were very surprised to see them so close. The only one we'd seen thus far had been far away hidden in the bush
Wow, nice Kudu in the first picture... that is spot on with their natural liking in territory! Always hidden and on the lookout.
The second picture is actually not a Kudu, but an antelope related to the Kudu... they are called Nyalas! They are a lot scarcer... I've seen some of them in the Kruger National Park.

Yeah, you're right. I forgot about them. This was in Londolozi when we were there on our honeymoon.
